Do you have to install RAM in similar pairs?

Is it absolutly necessary? Because I have 256MB inside my computer, and 256MB on an acessible SO-DIMM, but I want to switch that one out.

What type of ram do u want to match ?
ram match like this
sdram with sdram
ddr ram with ddr ram
ddr2 ram with ddr2 ram..

as long as its the same type of ram , the number of mb dosent matter

Not really, unless its running in dual-channel mode
