Well to start Hamsters can be aggrssive so it is wise to try to handle him as much as possible. Provide fresh water daily. Keep the cage clean and avoid using pine beding because it causes respiratory infections. You can use either the reuseable recycable bedding or the stuff I use which is little pebbles that absorb and deoderize but I cannot remember the name. You can either get rose or lavender or unscented. Both Petsmart and Wegmans sells it. Get him a wheel or a ball cuz they need exercise. Hamsters are generally nocturnal which means they sleep dusing the day and are active at night. Hamsters also do well by themselves so do not try to get him a buddy cuz they are aggresive and cage protective. Also a chew toy is sometimes good to alleviate boredem and to wear down their teeth. I cannot thin kof anythign else right now but good luck with him .

A lot of hamsters die from dry tail disease. You can buy a small bottle of the medication at any pet store or walmart, you just add a bit to the water bottle.
Chew sticks are a must because hamster teeth grow in fast and need to be controlled.
Fresh veggies like the tops of celery and carrots are good nutrients.
Clean the cage on a regular basis.
Have at least a running wheel and tube in the cage for activity.
Buy a ball that you can put the little thing in and let it roam your house.(The ball keeps the animal contained and protected.)
Hold them and play with them a lot so they become friendly.
**If you didn't already know, hamsters are nocturnal creatures. While you sleep, they will play.It may be a good idea to cover the cage with an old blanket to keep noise to a minimum or to remove the hamster from your sleeping quarters at night.**
Good luck with your new pet.

The best way to make your hamster like you is to hold him/her a lot! If you do that from the time they're very young, they are extremely friendly when they get older. Also, talk to her a lot. Animals are very social creatures and they respond to you when they hear your voice. I've had lots of hamsters and now a guinea pig and all mine have been very loving and loyal. My last hamster even stood up on her hind legs and come over to me every time I came into the room.
You also don't want to overly feed her, or give her treats often. Give her food *about* every day, or if she eats slower than that, give her food every other day, but remember--hamsters like to put food in their pouches and store it away in discreet places in their cages, so don't always assume that she's eaten everything!
Make sure to give her carrots and other vegetables so she stays healthy and get the mineral drops to put in her water. In the summer time, I always found it to be a good idea to give my hamsters two waterbottles so that if they ran out during the day, they didn't get dehydrated or too hot.
All the best of luck with your new furry friend! :D

dont get them out at midday, or around that time - it will be asleep. only have ONE hamster, not more, because even femles attack each other. stick to the same type of food, or slowly, bit by bit, introduce a new kind. hamsters like fresh veggies - but not cucumber or it will get dioreah, and chew sticks keep their teeth in shape. salt wheels are also good for hamsters - if they keep licking your skin, it means they are not getting enough salt. fresh water is a must - even if the water is still half full, it needs to be changed every day, same as food. for the first few days talk to the haster, let it get used to the cage, let it know you are there, but do not touch it. then you can introduce your hand to the cage, to stroke it, but do not get it out. eventually you can start playing with the hamster, and get it out regularly. if you buy it a clear ball, you can put the hamster inside it. the hamster would be free to roam around the house, and it will be protected, exersised, ad you will be able to see where it is, as the hamster will not be able to go i small cracks. do not give it chocolate, always wash hands before and after playing with it.
get it a wheel in its cage for exersise - you do not want your hamster to get fat.
hamsters like cages with different levels and tubes, they also like little houses to sleep in.
hamsters will move their food and bedding around in their cheek pouches, so do not worry if you think it is eating it bedding. clean sawdust in needed for the cage, and soft bedding - no straw or hay. ONLY FEED HAMSTER FOOD - my mum accidently fed our old hamster bird food, and it had to be put down :(. do not worry id the hamster is still for ages, they usually sleep during the day.
hope this helps :)

If you are looking to fatten up your hampster as an alternative to christmas turkey, I recommend a diet high in oats, eggs and especially protein and nutrious carbs such as stale bread and the likes.
Allowing your hampster 1 hour each day to run and play outside of the cage will help to make its muscles supple -
trust me - come christmas, the melt in your mouth sensation will be a hit with the guests.

make sure she has plenty of food and fresh water at all times and a wheel to exercise in and clean her 1 time a week. Dont use cedar bedding because her digestive system could get bad. Let her run in a ball that is sealed, you know the ones you buy at the store and let her run around. Most of all, be very careful and dont squish her.
GOODLUCK

Might have been a good idea to read up on hamster care BEFORE buying the thing. Plenty of books in the library!
