Chris Cornell has a huge following with his well documented resume as the lead singer from Soundgarden (one of the premier 90s rock bands), and Audioslave (one of the premier rock bands of this decade. Both bands are broken-up but Cornell carries on as a solo artists, and covers a lot of his Audioslave and Soundgarden songs live with full band.

It probably won't take long for his solo career now to catch up in popularity to that of his former bands.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been active since the early 80s, they are one of the most successful bands of their time since they rose to nationwide popularity in the late 80s/early 90s. I saw them live in Washington DC, and they put on a good rockin show, and often times will improvise jams in between songs.

Incubus has a very unique style with the way they blend hard rock riffs, and innovative guitar solos with a DJ sampling in sounds and effects. They are among the most experimental rock bands out there today. In my opinion though being experimental works quite well for them.

They may not always have hit single after hit single, but they are known well enough and have a huge following. They have enough popularity and music to pull from to headline their own arena tours.

According to Billboard the current top rock record is Linkin Park's Minutes to Midnight. Although, Nickelback with their release All the Right Reasons is listed at number 5 and has been on the charts for 75 weeks. Just shy of a year and a half, far longer than those listed above it, and it had been #1 on the charts at some point. Hinder is also in at #8 and has been on the charts for 51 weeks (it has to date peaked at #2).
So I guess currently you could make a case for Nickelback.

Also notable is Daughtry's self titled record is currently at #2 and has been on the charts for 28 weeks, having also reached #1 at some point.

Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance and Green Day get a lot of play here, but it also speaks to the demographic that is represented on this board, not necessarily to the sentiments of all American music.

Well, the popular but kind of overplayed artists... Fall Out Boy, MCR, Daughtry is getting popular, Hinder, and all of those types...

Well, I personally like artists like All-American Rejects, Graham Colton Band, McFLY (even though they aren't American or even popular here) are amazing..., House of Heroes, Three Days Grace, and those types...

Linkin Park, without a shadow of a doubt. (in my humble opinion) I know they have had problems with sales recently. They had best album in 2001. Blame lies with copying, but I think loads of others have had the same problems. The new album is completely different to any of the the others with the expception of a couple of songs. I have all the albums and will continue to buy them. Long Live L/P...!

Fall Out Boy is pretty popular in the US. I like them but don't think they deserve all the attention diverted at them, I mean they are good but not that good.
My Chemical Romance is really popular and I love their album The Black Parade.
To me, The All-Amewrican Rejects is my all time favorite...I love all their songs and they're just amazing.
