i have a amd athlon 64 cpu socket 939 can i just buy and install any cpu as long as it fits the 939 socket?

no. you need to make sure that your motherboard's BIOS is updated to support the new processor and then check the architecture of the processor to see if it can be supported by the motherboard. check your motherboard's specifications and see if it can support 65nm, 90nm or both types of architectures. if it can support the architecture, speed, and has the same socket for the motherboard then you are set.

You can buy any AMD CPU that fits the 939. Intel's won't work in an AMD fitting.

No. you need to figure out what your motherboard will support and get that. Check the user manual or look up the model number on google.

Not always, your BIOS need to be able to understand the faster model, so check the BIOS update page first
