My wife and I are curious about which over-the-counter and prescription medications are deemed safe for pregnancy. She has a friend who was prescribed Dramamine for morning sickness and it helped ease the nausea. Thanks.

I took Dramamine with my last pregnancy and it helped, although it will not totally take away the sickness. It was prescribed by my doctor b/c he wanted me to try a gentler "Class B" drug before going with Phenergan which is Class C. Another anti-nausea medication - Zofran - is also Class B, but very expensive so even with insurance you might be hard pressed to afford it. It is much more effective than Dramamine, though.

You can go here to learn about how the FDA classifies different drugs for pregnancy. Obviously, if you are going to take a medication in pregnancy, Class A or B is ideal, but Class C is still considered "relatively safe" pending further study:

Also, if you will call your doctor or midwife they can provide you with a list of approved over-the-counter remedies for use in pregnancy (i.e. antacids, pain relievers, etc.). Too numerous to list here!

Congrats on your baby!

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant (7 months) with my second child and my doctor has said that Dramamine is safe to take. Your wife is also able to take tylenol as a pain reliever. After the first trimester alot of medcines are ok to take. Yesterday I was given a prescription for Loritab for my severe migraines and the doctor and the pharmacist both told me that is one of the safer pain meds during pregnancy if tylenol doesn't work but of course nothing is completly safe, pregnant or not. If she has allergies, sinus problems all the over the counter tylenol meds are just fine to take. But before taking anything else I suggest you do talk to the doctor.

These are the kinds of things you ask your doctor. No offense, but what if you take the advice of someone here about a certain medication, and they turn out to be wrong? As it turns out the medication wasn't safe during pregnancy at all? Now wouldn't you feel guilty knowing you followed some silly person's advice, when you can just pick up the phone and call a nurse instead?

My doctor allowed Benadryl, Dramamie, Tums, Tylenol. Best to get a list from her OBGYN. I am sure they have one available if you ask the front desk or the doc. Mine did. Dramamine was the ONLY thing that eased my morning sickness. Anti-inflammatory are off limits because they can stimulate uterine contraction and cause early labor. When I was in the hospital with Pleurisy at 5 months pregnant, they gave me Morphine and I was soooo sick! As far as any psychiatric meds go, some are safe, some are not - best to talk to a PSYCHIATRIST about that rather than an OBGYN or consult them both.

For morning sickness Dramamine is safe in the first trimester. I took it with both my pregnancies. Emetrol is another medication safe during pregnancy. I tried it but didn't have much success. It may work for you. You can also try nibbling on saltine crackers first thing in the morning (before you get out of bed) and any time you feel sick. Hope it gets better!

Your doctor should give you a list of what is and is not safe to take. The only thing I have taken with the doctor's approval is Tylenol and Zofran for morning sickness.

Contact your doctor. They gave me a list of over-the-counter meds that I could take. And for the prescription drugs, I would make sure to ask your doctor BEFORE you take ANY of them. Granted, there are a lot of things that you can take, but still ask your doctor.

Homeopathic remedies contain no lively components and count completely on the placebo effect. as a result they are risk-free to take for the period of being pregnant and breastfeeding. it somewhat is no longer actual of all complementary remedies, including herbalism which, using fact the answerer above me says, has no longer been thoroughly researched. chinese language herbs especially have proved risky for all and sundry no longer in straightforward terms nursing mothers.
