Hi!,
I have a question to ask about the development of the fetus. At my first ultrasound, at 5weeks pregnant the fetus about 0.832cm and it look like a black dot in my uterus. About 10 days after, i went back for another ultrasound, the fetus is about 1.05cm and the dot is no longer a dot, it look like a bean shape. My question is that at the 2nd ultrasound there are no fetal heartbeat. And my doctor said that it more likely i have a miscarriage. I am kind of confuse cause if i have an miscarriage how come it showing the fetus change from a dot to a bean shape. if a fetus is already dead, should it not change at all? now i should be about 8 or 9 week pregnant, and went back to the doctor for a blood test to see my hcG level. because i have no miscarriage symptoms, and before going for D &C procedure, i want to make sure that i am really miscarriage. Does anyone in here have the same experience before?

Yes, it's very possible to not hear a fetal heartbeat at 8 or 9 weeks. With my last two pregnancies, the midwife didn't hear a heartbeat until 10 weeks.
It doesn't mean it's not there, or that the baby is in trouble, just that it's so small and very hard to position the dopplar perfectly to detect it.
Please don't worry yet. I think your doctor should not have mentioned the possibility of miscarriage just b/c a heartbeat was not heard. You do not need to go in for a D&C unless you actually miscarry, which you obviously have not yet - no cramping or bleeding.
And if you are going to have a miscarriage, it is always best to just let it happen and then only if your body does not expel the pregnancy entirely, THEN you go in for the procedure.
My prayers are with you. Hang in there, hon.

10 weeks pregnant wtihout fetal heartbeat
Hi,
Same thing happened to me, I am pregnant with my first baby, my husband and I have been trying for so long when I found out I was pregnant we were ecstatic.I was 7weeks pregnant when my husband and I went to get our first ultrasound no fetal heartbeat was detected. We were devastate, it was supposed be the most wonderful day of my life instead it turned into a nightmare. I had a choice to do a D&C or misscary naturally, I of course picked naturally. I am now 10 wks pregnant and I still haven't misscarried, I have gone for a second opinion because I have no systopms of misscarrying but we were told the same thing. I too questioned the doctor about the development of the baby. The doctor told us that the baby can have no heartbeat but that the placenta is still nurturing the baby, I didn't know that was possible. Now I will go through the D& C next week. Now I wonder if I will get pregnant again because I am 37yrs old and I wonder if I do get pregnant will it happen again?

I'm sorry, but at 8 or 9 weeks you should see a heart beat. You should of course make sure that your HCG levels are dropping and that the fetus does not continue to grow, but the reason it would have changed is because at the first ultrasound it was still alive and grew a bit and then died.
One question, though. If the first ultrasound was at 5 weeks, and the second was 10 days later, wasn't the second one when you were about 6-7 weeks pregnant? If that is the case, it's possible that the heartbeat just has not shown up on the ultrasound. I hope that's all it is!

I had the same thing happen. My baby died at around 9 weeks. We had seen a heartbeat a week or so before. It took my body a few days to recognize that the baby wasn't alive anymore. My doctor told me for some women their bodies don't recognize that the baby died and the pregnancy continues (except the baby does not develop). If you want to have proof, ask them to do another ultrasound that shows blood flow. If the baby has died, there will be no blood flow to the baby from the placenta. This is what they did for me to confirm that our baby had passed. I know you are going through a difficult time. I wish you the best.
EDIT- Just some additional information. I had a missed miscarriage and had it at home. But because the placenta didn't completely come out I had to have a D&C. The D&C was completely painless and I recovered quickly.

Don't have a D&C until you are positive there is no hope. Maybe the Dr's equipment is faulty? The baby has obviously grown since the previous ultrasound. If you are miscarrying, waiting a while before D&C will not hurt anything, other than leave you wondering and worried. My niece got a call from her nurse and they told her she had miscarried. She scheduled the D&C for the next morning. The phone rang as they were walking out the door. Something made them answer it. It was the Dr calling to tell them the nurse had given them someone else's results and the baby was fine. Had the Dr called 5 mins later, it would have been too late and they would have lost a healthy baby.

I went in at 7 weeks and they had a heartbeat and i went back at 11 weeks 3 days and there was no heartbeat. They measured the baby at 11 weeks. The fetus might have passed just a few days ago! I am so so sorry if you miscarried! I also had a D n C. Make sure to ask the doctor all the questions you have.

OMG!!! You have a dumb doctor!!! Please, please get a second opinion! The baby is too young for you to hear a heartbeat, I had an ultrasound with my first kid (after complications) and I was 10 weeks, no heartbeat was heard until about 14 weeks. If your baby is growing, why would the doctor suggest a D&C procedure. Although the doctor could be correct about a possible miscarriage, this does not sound right and I think you need to get a second opinion ASAP!!
Good Luck!
