It's a 4 lane street, divided by a median. There are cables running across it, each end attached to something the size of a cable box. I thought they might be some kind of sensors, since they are close to a traffic light, but then why would they go all the way across the street? Any ideas?

Thanks everyone... I thought they might be, but a few weeks ago they had people out there counting with clipboards, so I wasn't sure.

If there is one "cable", actually an air hose, at each location, then they are counting traffic. Less often, if there are a pair of hoses, they are measuring speed of traffic, but truckers are known to step on brakes and roll them up so other means of non-contact speed measurement are used.

lei: The only cables running across the road are the ones used by your local traffic control people. Usually they are hoses connected to a sensor which counts the number of cars passing a specific point on the road. In that they are near a traffic light, they are likely seeing if the timing of the light is correct for the current traffic. The purpose of this traffic counter is just a guess, but a good guess. It would be nice if you believed it's a vehicle speed detecting device for the cops. Might make you slow down a bit. Have a nice day and drive safely; the people who installed the counting device are helping you to do just that, drive safely.

Those are sensors that keep tabs on the traffic flow, and speed of cars through the area.
They're used when the county is going to put in new traffic lights, speed bumps, make a change to the speed limit, etc.

Its a traffic study that is used to determine which roads have the most traffic so that it can be decided which projects will be done first.

those 'cables' are probably air hoses. When a tire rolls over them, they pulse some pressure that operates a counter. At the end of the testing period, the highway engineer knows approximately how many vehicles used the road that period.

I'd like to know that too. We have lots of those around here. I think it has something to do with them counting the number of cars that drive down the road...maybe to see if it needs to be widened...etc.
