The glow of a comet's tail has two sources - emissions from ionized gas, and sunlight reflecting off dust particles shed by the comet. In some comets you can see two separate tails, because the gas and dust react differently to the forces acting on them.

A comet's tail is actualy debris from the comet itself. This debris reflects light from nearby stars, allowing us to see not only where it's been, but where it's going.
