I work for a major mortgage mortgage firm (multi billion dollar firm), but due to the recent crash in the industry they are preparing for a company wide layoff. My job may be at risk... i have been here for 5 years and i make pretty good money but for the past year or so things have gone down hill. No more bonuses, no more salary increases, no motive! I have nother job lined up ... its a manager position in the retail business, should i jump ship and just go for this new job or wait and see what happens? Oh yeah, this new job is only available for a short period of time so its either now or never ... advise???

jump ship
I say take charge and go while you can. I'm in the same situation and if I had another job lined up, I'd take it in a heartbeat. No point staying on a sinkin boat.

I work in the fashion industry so I know what you are going through. If you can try to save up as much money from here on out and the near future. Everything is shaky now with the war and all. See if you can keep your other new management position open until you get laid off. If this is not the case go to your manager and see if you are one of the ones to stay. It would be horrible to leave only to find that they value you enough to stay on. Lets face it, everyone isn't leaving. Take the other job if you are going to leave and apply for unemployment insurance while going to school to make yourself more profitable.

A wise man once said "dig your well before you're thirsty".
FACT: No job is secure. It doesn't matter if you're making 7mil a year as a VP or even CEO, you can still be replaced by someone younger, and freshly degreed, that's willing to work longer hours, for less $. How fun is job hunting at 50..60..
OPTIONS: Get another job. (again?!)
Go back to school. (time & $ commitment in addition to providing for your family)
Win the lotto (never mind)
Open a franchise (5,6, even 7 figure borrowed or leveraged start-up cost, building lease, utilities, insurances, $advertising$, babysitting employees, 16-20 hr. days, 6-7 days/wk, are we having fun yet?) Good choice if all goes well
and you can manage to keep your family together too.
Jump ship, take new job, don't wait to "see what happens". Hook up with a group of successful, free, financially
secure, family businessmen willing to teach you everything they know about improving yourself, your marriage, and having more time and $ to spend with your family and friends.(digging your well)

Jump ship. With your experience, you can always go back to the mortgage business in the future should it pick up again. But right now, I would get out of it if I were you. Take the new job before someone else does. Good luck!

Seriously, the only reasonable thing to do is to go for the new job. You can't sit around waiting to see if you get fired, especially since you have a family to take care of. You have to do whatever is necessary to stay afloat in life.
