Does it mean that out of every 100 times sex occurs, 1 time results in pregnancy (I seriously hope it's not that low).

Or perhaps, of the population using the contraception for a certain time, 99% will not get pregnant?

And for a "bonus mark", which contraception method has the highest protection rate when used correctly? (Sorry, I can't actually give out bonus marks....but you can feel good about it if you know...)

"Effectiveness is measured by how many women become pregnant using a particular birth control method in a year. Thus, if 100 women use a method that has a 12 percent failure rate, then sometime during that year, 12 of the women should become pregnant." That's what Wiki says anyway...

For tables, see another wikipedia page :

On the instructions you get with your contraceptive they write that 1 women out of 100 a year will fall pregnant when using it.i was taking the pill for 4 years and did not concieve...i have always found the pill the best BUT they obviously do not protect against STDs so my advice...Use a condom and the pill to be extra safe!!x

I think the 99% thing is just a way for pharmaceutical companies to "cover their ***" legally. If they said it was 100% effective and someone happened to get pregnent while they were using the contraceptive (because they weren't using it properly, for instance) then they could sue the manufacturers for false advertisement.

I think the most effective contraceptive (besides abstinence, of course) is the depo provera shot.

Effectiveness of contraception must allow for people forgetting to take the pill, condoms splitting etc. That is why they can only be classed as 99% effective. I would have thought that the contraceptive pill would be the most effective (but i could be wrong!)

It's a percentage as there is a chance with all contraceptives that you can still get pregnant. Not one in a hundred or 99% of population.
Some of the higher percentage are: pill, IUD, diaphragm
Most effective of all: Abstinence!!

One in a hundred, there is a chance of pregnancy - about 5 years worth for me.
100% would be abstinence.

in my opinion 99% effective means that it will work 99% of the time - i think that agrees with your first scenario
as for your second question, the best way to not get pregnant is by keeping it in your pants!

99% means that the manufacturer recognizes that someone using their product is not 100% assured of not getting pregnant.

When they say 99% they usually mean 99.9%, so no to the one out of one hundred.

It means that nothing made by man or nature is perfect. It means that in these litigious times, consumers have to be told what is so glaringly obvious.
