This is absolutely possible. In fact, I would say it is impossible to not gain something.
Life is about balance. Nothing happens that doesn't affect something else. In physics, there is a law that states for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. I like to think this applies to more than just physical forces.
When you lose something very dear, another opportunity of some kind always opens up. During times like these, you can make the best of it by exploiting the negatives. For instance, if you lose a person who you are very close to, it hurts terribly. However, you were likely spending a lot of time with that person. And now you can spend this time on something or someone else that is very dear to you and may end up helping you more in the long term.

If one were to lose an expensive piece of jewelry or something that they loved more than any other possession, losing it could show them that it was unnecessary in the first place and they might stop wasting money on things of hte sort.

Yes, but I believe it's never as wonderful as the original thing you held so dear to your heart. Time does not heal all wounds...

Of course, especially if it was a person. You can learn so much from someone and still end up losing them in the end.

Yes! The experience of loving that person or animal is priceless. You can't buy memories like that.
