It's not necessary no. Wearing boardshorts is just like wearing regular shorts. You can go commando if you want. Just be aware of two things: the fabric may become more see-thru when it gets wet and wet fabric has a tendency to cling to your curves. The decision is ultimately up to you. I personally prefer bikini bottoms under them just so that no one sees my junk if I get throttled and the sand has a harder time finding its way into my bodily cavities.

i don't see any reason why being a girl has anything to do with it... if you find your shorts to be a little rough against your bum, you could certainly wear a bikini bottom underneath. i wear a nylon liner, aka speedo under my board shorts when i'm surfing, i go commando all other times.
