I mainly read my news online, so I don't know about major newspapers, but I only noticed the California beef recall when it was on the yahoo most searched list. It should be on all major headlines!!! This is the food we EAT! Here is a portion of the FDA press release:
WASHINGTON, June 3, 2007 - United Food Group, LLC, a Vernon, Calif., establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 75,000 pounds of ground beef products because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. The problem was discovered through sampling done by the California Department of Health Services and the Colorado Department of Health, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the course of an investigation into illnesses. The ground beef products were produced on April 20 and were shipped to retail distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon and Utah.

Most of the beef affected by the recall has probably already been consumed.

I saw it on national news several days ago. I'm not sure how much wider coverage you want it to have. It only affects 11 states.

Sounds as though the small number of states and the fact that they are in the same general area did not necessitate "world news". ;-)=

Because wouldn't we rather hear about "Paris finding God in Prison" than a threat to our health? Pretty sad, huh?
