San Francisco is my favorite, there is so much more to do there. Way better shopping, a better selection of food, more tourist attractions like Fishermans Wharf, Alcatraz, Lombard Street, Union Square, Museums, baseball game, etc..

The only thing Santa Cruz has to offer over SF is a better price and a beach atmosphere.

I visited both places a couple years ago, and I preferred Santa Cruz. It's got a beach, an amusement park and its a laid back, fun town.

San Francisco has a lot to offer of course (sights, cultural offerings), but I noticed a lot of aggressive homeless people, and I have never liked the general vibe of that city. (And I am from NYC). So, I'd personally choose Santa Cruz.

To very different types of places.

San Francisco is a big city, with an international flair. World class shopping, restaurants, and hotels. It's one of the great cities of the world. Great sights and museums, lots of fun.

Santa Cruz is a lay back small beach/college city. There are no great hotels, restaurants or shopping. However there is plenty to do and see. It's very unique place to visit, it's fun and inviting. It has the west coast's only boardwalk, with a very fun amusment park. There is a nice downtown area with some great stores.

However you don't really have to decide as they are only a couple of hours apart. Why not visit both?

It really depends on what you want on your visit.

Santa Cruz has a fun beach area and beautiful mountains, plus a nice laid-back style.

San Francisco is a vibrant city with lots of theatre, music, museums, parks, and a huge variety of tourist attractions.
