Its in order to get 4 teams in every division. You could apply the same question to the Rams who do not belong in the NFC West at all, but they are there to even out numbers in each division.

It was about NATURAL RIVALRY when they realigned. Hence the Steelers, Ravens, Browns, and Bengals stayed as one division. If they went for Geography then the Colts and Dolphins would switch places. The Colts, Patriots, Bills, and Jets would be the North. The Steelers, Bengals, Browns, Ravens would be the EAST(The AFC East is AFC East teams PRIOR to realignment as to their name the Central became the North for the most part) The Dolphins, Titans, Jags, and Texans would the be the South. The Chiefs, Broncos, Raiders, Chargers would be the WEST(to keep natural rivals). So why not done that way? After all the Colts had NO NATURAL RIVALS. So the reason was the DOLPHINS have a rivalry with the Bills and maybe Jets(the Pats weren't that great before the realignment so not counting them).

The NFL didn't worry very much about staying true to geographical regions when they rearranged the divisions. If you want to pay attention to geography, it's odd that the Colts are in the AFC South, and it's completely ridiculous that the Cowboys are in the NFC East.

From what I understand it has something to do with keeping rivalries in tact. The Ravens are not in the north but the are in the AFC north, while New England and the Jets are in the AFC east but are in the north. The Chiefs are technically in the mid west and not the west. The Cowboys are not really in the east.

Hey buddy the falcons and panthers are in the NFC south. Anyway, Why did the Bucs used to be in the NFC North. Why are the Chiefs in the AFC West. I think when the league started they had the divisions make more sense, but when expansion teams come and teams change location they have to put them somewhere and they can't all make sense.

It's just to keep the balance in the divisions, each one needs 4 teams. Things are just screwy sometimes you can't help geography.
Terry C you know nothing, the Falcons and Panthers are in the NFC SOUTH. The NFC West is Seattle, San Fran, St. Louis, and Arizona.

Yes, but Miami is not south. Dallas is in the East but New Orleans is in the South.
Geography and the NFL are strangers.

just like someone said be4.....why are the cowboys in the nfc east? they did a realignment a few years back and at first it completly fooled me at first. but dallas and washington is one of the premier nfl rivalries. if you move dallas to the south division, dallas and washington would only play once a year.

Why were the Falcons and Panthers in the NFC West when they are damn near the east coast?...Only to keep the divisions even as far as # of teams, I'm guessing...and to those who pointed out that the Falcons and Panthers are in the NFC South...Yeah, they are now...I phrased it wrong...In case you didn't know it, until the last realignment, they were in the NFC West...You guys haven't been following football long enough to know I guess...
