hi got a ati x700pro graphics card-got 2 ports on back.got 2 monitors connected,1 to each port.i run multi monitors in 'stretch mode' such that 2 monitor workscreens(of 1024x768) becomes one large one that spans both monitors-2048x768
prob-i want 3 monitors linked to my pc, using just one graphics card and still run span mode such that the workspace is now 3072x768..the question is this..........

can i do this with a vga splitter into one of the ports(which will then support 2 monitors) , and then have the third monitor on the other graphics card port
thanks

A Vga splitter just duplicates the content of the first monitor on to the second. It does not allow them to show different things. You would need a card with three outputs (they do make them) or a second video card for the third monitor.

No, you can't do what you asked. The card is only able to output a signal to two discrete monitors (one on each socket). All a VGA splitter does is provide an identical signal to the two monitors connected through it.

You are running your monitors at 1024x768. I would strongly suggest you buy a pair of larger monitors capable of a higher resolution rather than any attempt to run three 1024x768 monitors side-by-side.

For completeness, I will add that the only graphics-card with three monitor sockets was the unpopular Matrox Parhelia. Matrox do also produce monitor splitters which do exactly what you require (make two monitors appear to the graphics-card as a single wider monitor) but they are very expensive and you'd be better off with a new larger monitor. Check out http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/corpo/products/home.php and look at the Graphics eXpansion modules. A quick check showed the DualHead2Go Analogue version at over £90 from Dabs.com (who are usually quite competitive). You money would be better spent on a larger monitor.

Either your power supply isn't enough or the card is faulty. How many extras do you have in your case? Disconnect any items in your computer not essential to a simple boot up (cd drives, second hard drives, extra fans, pci cards, etc). Will it boot up with just the basics and your master hard drive? Edit: From your additional details I would say the card is faulty and to return it.

No. If you try using a splitter, it will simply display the same thing on those two monitors.

nope. can't split video signals.
need 2 dual head video cards, or 1 dual head and 1 regular ( not onboard) if you system supports it.
