It shouldn't. The government should no legislate morality, nor should it be able to say what informed consenting adults can do.

Polyamory is okay but polygamy is not? It makes no logical sense. You and your spouse can have other people in your life and bed without breaking laws, and live together and act married, but just not BE married... WHY? It makes no sense!

It's illegal because most people don't like the idea of people having more than one spouse and want to force their preferences on everyone else. I don't see why we need laws to prohibit polygamy (or "gay marriage", etc.) If three or more adults mutually agree that they want to be "married" to each other I don't see how it's any of my business. I think the real solution is to get the government out of the marriage business entirely except to enforce contracts entered into by legal adults. Churches could specify terms in a marriage contract they require to perform or recognize a marriage (opposite sex, one spouse, etc.) if they want to. Private businesses could do the same. Anyone who doesn't want to meet a particular church's requirements can look for another church or just write their own contract (we'll live together, share resources, be monogamous, split property if we split up, etc.).

Besides having women reduced to being as property then, when a man is divorced from each one and the current law is that the other person gets 1/2 of what is your's, the man would end up oweing someone then if that were the case. More wives, more problems overall. Think of all those women in the same house at one time, then take some and they really just want him to themself, the ugly rumors and the jealousy if one of them gets pregnant and the other wanted to, etc. I feel that more than one spouse at one time is trouble. Think of all the more children that man could end up having to support as many women getting pregnant by him is another matter to deal with at one time also. It is like a harem. It just devalues the point of marriage when with many. More spouses at once, more issues undenyably.

There is really no reason for polygamy to remain illegal outside of it has been used to exploit young women.

i an imagine tax code would need to be revised as well as workplace benefits and spousal rights so that people don't get married to abuse the system, however outside of that, there is really no reason.

technically, when a guy or girl marries another guy/girl then the the marriage isn't valid if there wasn't a divorce/death of the first partner...
therefore anything past the first marriage isn't even recognized in the eyes of the law
that aside, its a religious view that some people believe in. even if they were to be arrested for it, most will cry discrimination of their human rights because they are practising their religion and in North America you have the right to practise whatever religion you choose

It allows for the subjugation of women. If polygamy were equally available to both men and women, that might be a different story.

Well, one problem that I can see arising from polygamy is that a person can have several spouses without each of their spouses knowing that the other spouses exist. Other than that, I have no problem with it. I'm a one-man woman, but to each his own!

It's that religion thing again.

Personally, I don't care who marries who or how many wives or husbands someone wants or has.

My only concern is that they are ALL self-supporting and don't collect any tax-payer benefits like welfare, food-stamps, WIC, etc.

My belief is it's a free country. Help yourself to all the spouses and children you want...just don't expect ME to support them.

Unknown. It really isn't the right of the government to involve itself into people's personal business.

In and of itself, marriage isn't seen as anything other than a legal contract between individuals from the govt. point of view anyway.

we r supposed 2 b more evolved than that. other than having towns w/ too many siblings running around, and the burden on the welfare system, we don't live in times where population growth is tantamount, therefore, we don't need plural marriages.
