My favorite's George Pal's 1960 production, "The Time Machine", starring Rod Taylor, Alan Young and Yvette Mimieux. A great script, full of real ideas about what kinds of futures we build for ourselves, about the value of love, friendship and imagination. Great art direction, a fantastic time machine, some marvelous special effects and a memorable score by Russell Garcia. A movie that continues to inspire, to spark the imagination and touch the heart. This one's a classic, and prophetic as well---it's scarey how much of George Pal's visions of the way life is moving have come true over the last 47 years!

Besides Back to the Future, there was a movie made in the 80s called The Final Countdown. where a modern day aircraft carrier goes back in time...to 3 days before Pearl Harbor. And they struggle as to whether they should prevent the attack on Pearl Harbor or not

...having a preference for time travel films, where fiction crosses the boundaries of actual history, I'd have to call a personal draw between "TIME AFTER TIME", from 1979 (author H.G. Wells, who wrote the original Time Machine, builds a machine, and travels to the future, in pursuit of Jack the Ripper, who has used Wells machine in the same fashion), and "FRANKENSTEIN UNBOUND", from 1990 (a scientist from the near future, builds a machine, and travels to the past, at a point not only when Mary Shelley wrote the classic novel Frankenstein, but also a point where a fictitious Dr. Frankenstein comes to life, and has built his monster)

George Pal's "The Time Machine" is definitely THE classic time travel movie. I also liked Twelve Monkeys.

Primer (http://imdb.com/title/tt0390384/ ) is low-budget and somewhat confusing, but has a thought-provoking and idea-driven plot.
