and won't come out. Finally I used the emergency eject to take the pieces out. But the thing is that I just finished installing Office03 from the same CD and pressed the eject button when this happened. So, the CD was seated properly. What could have caused it to break???

Hi. Some CD burners (you don't say if this is a burner or not) can spin the disk much faster than normal. Some have been known to spin so fast that they come apart. You disk may also have been cracked.

It's the new copy protection scheme from Microsoft - self-destructing CD's!
Honestly, it shouldn't happen - bay-mounted CD drives are supposed to stop when they encounter minimal pressure. But if it's a laptop with a manual eject button and manual door opening, there might be an issue with the driver that allowed it to eject before it stopped spinning.

These cracks are called "stress fractures". Tiny tiny cracks that can develop from being spun at such high speed inside your cd rom drive. It is unusual to hear about but In 13 years i have had it happen to me once. It was a copy of Microsoft picture it. It literally exploded in the drive like a shotgun blast. Fortunately my drive survived with no problem. cd's and dvd's are massed produced like everything eles and occasionally one will be sub-standard. If it is a legitimate copy of the software ..take it back to where you got it and ask for a replacement, or contact the software maker and ask for a replacement. Hope this helps

Yeah. If the drive is off balance, when is spins it will break it. I had it happen to me in 2001, and had to take the case off etc.. You didn't mention if it was a desktop, but if so, disconnect the power, and take the case off. Real easy. Find the connection cable going to the drive, and unplug it. Then unscrew the drive, take it out and make sure no small pieces are left in. Then put it all back again. Good luck.

I can't say, exactly, what makes a CD burst in the CDRom Drive, but I have seen it happen on occasion.
You may want to look in to a new Optical Drive to replace that CD. We know one thing with somewhat certainy (since it's an Office03 disk, I assume it's new), the disc didn't make itself burst into pieces. Microsoft hasn't gone that far, yet.

Speed and/or faulty disc...discs have been known to shatter in the drive. You are lucky you still have a working drive and system. If it was an original (think not) you could mail it back and get a replacement. In that it was Office 03, I would say it was a cut cd...buy better discs.

It was probably already damaged when you inserted it into the drive, or your CD Drive is warped.
I have never seen a computer drive warp before; however, I have seen it happen to a walk-man from being overheated.
