Cheerleading isn't what most people usually assume. There is a lot involved. A Cheerleader's main job is to cheer for the team. Sideline cheering is when you see the girls at football or basketball games doing chants. Competition cheerleading is what most people don't get to see. Cheerleaders preform a 2 minute 30 second routine that includes a cheer and a dance. Ok, basically cheerleading can be broken down into four categories; Motions, Stunts, Jumps, and Tumbling.
The basic motions include High V, Low V, T, Broken T, Buckets, Candlesticks, Touchdowns, Low Touchdowns, Right diagonals, and left diagonals.
Next comes stunting. In stunting there are your flyers(the girls who get thorough in the air), Bases (the girls who hold up the flyers: there are normally two bases), and Backspoters (the girl who helps hold the flyer up). There is also sometimes a front spot, who does the same as the backspot, only in front. There are many different stunts that a team can preform, the most basic being a thigh stand (the flyer stands on the two bases thighs). There are also preps, extensions, one-mans, pyramids and so much more. To really understand what they are try googling pictures of them.
Next are jumps. The basic jumps done by cheerleaders are toe-touches, pikes, herkies, and a front hurdler, Once again these are hard to expain so you might want to look up some pictures.
Finally, there is tumbling, or the gymnastics part of cheerleading. Some tumbling that cheerleaders do include cartwheels, back handsprings, back tucks, layouts, and full twisting layouts. There are so many other skills preformed by cheerleaders but these are the most common.
If you still need some help understanding some of these things try googling some pictures or watching some cheerleading routines on youtube. Hope I helped.
