With hydraulic lifters, I've always done it with engine running if you can---the base adjustment with engine off is not very accurate and may only be enough to get the engine to start. Once engine is warmed up, I would use an old valve cover with holes or slots drilled in it to line up with the rocker nuts...you'll get a lot of oil spray coming out of the pushrods so keep the area covered with towels or buy some clips at a parts store that clip on the rockers to deflect the oil. Loosen each arm nut one at a time until you hear the rocker clatter, then tighten until it stops and then tighten one more full turn to set the pushrod in the middle of the valve's piston bore. Doesn't matter where you start with this method--just make sure to do them all.
With solid lifters, you'll have to consult a manual on the procedure which is usually set engine at TDC, adjust specific ones with a feeler gauge to the proper lash, rotate 180 degrees and adjust the rest if I recall correctly.

bring it up on TDC and roll the pushrod back and forth and tighten until it stops and tighten another half turn.....then roll the engine over 180 degress and do the remaining three (i don't remember which ones) that were all the way down in the lifter bore and this should be fairly close at least enough to run it and if any are making noise repeat the procedure......this is if the engine has a hydraulic cam...if it's a solid lifter than you just adjust the lash with a feeler gauge until at the camshaft spec....hope this gets you out of the woods

the subject is a 305 is a susceptible engine. no be counted what you do to it, there won't in any respect ever be any opposition between a 305 and a good sturdy 350. And thats the max you're able to do to those heads, you have a topic there is not extra you're able to do to them. If this have been in a small mild vehicle, it may be exciting, for some people, yet actually there are a number of 350 available and so lots extra overall performance oriented components that do the activity extra low-priced, and extra valuable.and dont bypass away you wishing you had a 350 in the beginning.
