I'm writing a fantasy story and the main character rides a dragon. The dragon is male, has black scales, and blue eyes. I don't know what to name him. I was thinking about synonyms for black, and onyx was a possibility. However, a name like a Greek God would be cool. I want something creative/masculine/mighty sounding. Preferably nothing long. PLEASE give me your ideas and suggestions! Thank you!

I've gone through and read all of your suggestions and I've been banging my head against walls because I can't decide. But I finally came up with Azuryx... its a mixture of Azure like the eyes of the dragon and onyx like the scales. Azuryx (A-zur-icks). From a reader's perspective, what do you think of the name?

First off: I know your pain. I am trying to do the same thing for over a year.
Anyway, a name does not have to be long or really creative. In Eragon the dragon is blue like a Saphire. aka Saphira. And the auther came up with Eragon by taking out the D in Dragon and putting a E there instead.
You can even use common names and give then a interesting spelling.
Once of my own charaters name is Erica. However I wanted her to have a better looking spelling so I spell it Eryka. Just look at the difference.

My suggestion would be to look at names that you like and do some reseach on the names. Find out where they are from and what they mean. It is nice to have a name where the meaning describes the charater. Work with spelling but don't go so crazy that people have no idea how to say the name.
Go look though words in different languages to find a word that fits your charater and has a nice ring to it. Gealic is one of the best languages to use in my opinion.

I know I didn't give you any suggestions but I think it is better when the author actually comes up the the name sense they do know the charater best. I hope this helps you.

you could go with the usual Xerkes or Onyx or Zeus or amon-hotep. This is what everyone does when they get a big super-power beast like a Dragon.

Or, you could inject a bit of humor - You could name him Frank, or Bob.

Or, you could give him a simple peasants name like Brinn or Sean since I assume the main character finds and names the dragon and he is a boy, I doubt he'd name him Thunderclese! He'd name him like he would name a Dog. You could name him Spot, or Rex. Rex is actually a good name, it means King.

How about Draconus Timeo Rex and he tells everyone - Just call me Rex. It translates to Dragon - to fear - the king.

Or, you could simply call him Dragon. Or, you could make part of the novel about how the Dragon has a secret name - or maybe he's just stubborn and won't tell anyone his name so they call him Drac. Or maybe it test of the rider.

There is a latin dictionary ehre - it's a great language for naming odd things, since it's such an interesting language. The very term latin has all kinds of connotations in our language. And you can just find three words you like and put them together.

i've no clue sorry, but i know exactly how you feel. one my suggestions is just to take a word, like for instance, i don't know . . .ok "disaster" and you could get,
1 aster
2 isidar
3diast
the list goes on . . . anyways, just move around letters until you find something that you like and that fits the character's personality. (take it from another cute, blonde, writer and onyx is a cool name so if my advice doesn't help, i think you'll get it on your own :D)
