I would start with atleast 5 or 10 gallon tank or bigger if you have. Put a Betta in it with some Neon's tetras It looks beautiful. If you have a 10 gallon tank put a goldfish. They are very easy and cheap. Betta's don't need a filter but goldfish do. You should have filter though. I would clean the tank ever week or ever other week for a Betta and once a week for a goldfish (depending on the state of the water and algea). Try a Betta and an African Drawf Frog (they stay at the bottom and stay in the water 24/7) just make sure the frog gets food and that you have a lid. .
Make sure you put water conditioning in the water prier to placing fish in the water. I wait 24 hours or more. Do this everytime you do a water change. I would do a 15% to 30% water change.
You might also want to cycle the tank before you add any fish which takes about 2 - 3 weeks or you can cycle the tank with fish which takes a little longer. If your going to cycle the tank with fish, I would start with Turquoise Danios. Put a school/shool of 2 to 4.
Note: If your not going to cycle your tank before adding fish, your tank will still cycle with what ever fish you do place in the tank. Also, a tank doesn't really start cycling until fish are added so I would start cycling a tank with fish.

We have several aquariums and so far the fancy guppies are the best with young kids. They reproduce easy so if some do die it is easy for replacement yourself. You do however have to let nature take its course with survival of the fittest however or you will end up with many tanks as you save babies! These fish could not be any easier and they are happy with flake food, another plus.
I would get a tank that can have a good filter system though so you are enjoying the fish and cleaning less. 10 gallon is probably good and minimize the gravel in the bottom so there is less area for pollutions to accumulate. Hope you and your child enjoy as much as we do!

Sorry to hear of your losses.
I would suiggest you start with a 20 gallon tank. The larger the tank the easier to care for in the long run to be honest. Smaller tanks seem easier at first, but the extra size of a 20 gallon with allow for mistakes much easier, they are far more forgiving.
As for the fish, I would stock it with smaller tetras such as neons, lemons, black phamtoms, red phantoms etc. As well as a few cory catfish for the bottom and a few male guppies for the top area of the tank.
Before adding fish you will want to cycle your tank though. Since you are a biginner, the best and most important thing you need is some information to help you along. I'm going to add 2 links at the bottom that will help you greatly in keeping your tank and keeping the fish alive and healthy.
Hope this helps and if I can help further feel free to email me.

Goldfish are nice for kids. If you are talking about a large fishbowl, make sure the water sits out so it's at room temperature before you put new fish in. There are drops you can buy to take the chlorine out of the water. Don't overfeed the fish or the water will get dirty very fast. If your fishbowl isn't too large, you should probably only have a couple of fish in there. Change the water once a week (letting the new water sit out & adding the drops to take out the chlorine). You can get lots of good information at a pet store where you buy the fish.

depending on tank size, but 6 - 8 neon tetras are very attractive , they like to dart around the tank and are color full, pretty easy to take care of , the thing you should learn is to vacuum the aquarium gravel once a week for left over food and excrete and do about 25% of water change wont take more then 15 min per week, good luck and sorry for the loss :(
well to start off you need to buy the biggest aquarium you can afford and space you have go here and read http://www.fishlore.com/Beginners.htm very helpful
here is a very helpful site for neon tetras and even for the aquarium setup and anything you need to know

5 years for a betta is previous. The human equivalent could be approximately ninety years previous!! Congratulations on taking such super care of your betta. the elementary age of bettas is approximately 3.5 years so your betta is an previous guy. the lack of activity and alter in colour is all a factor of previous age in fish. Surge is nearing the tip of his existence. save him gentle and permit him relax.... he's deserved it!! it somewhat is complicated to assert how lots longer he would be around yet he's amazingly previous for a betta.

goldfish im gonna guess nothing cleans itself but gold fish you just get a tank fill it lik 75% water and drop goldfish. ever yday drop little foods and there you go but dont sprinkle too many food cause fish dont have (goldfish an example) sensors in stomach so they are too stupid to realize they are full and will keep eating till they die
