You're right. It's not the case for all teenagers but you have to admit that there are teens out there whose parents buy them every material luxury who are not generous, kind or well-behaved. Unfortunately, those are the kids that give teens a bad rep. My personal opinion is that a lot of kids nowadays are not always given the chance to learn what it is to really earn the things they have. My first car was a 10 yr old Buick but I loved it because I had earned every penny that it took to buy that car. I was buying a lot of my clothes by the time I was 16, not with my dad's credit card but with money I earned from working a real job. The kids that get everything they want just by asking for it and not by working for it aren't learning what it is to earn their own way in the world. That being said, I don't think that a teen whose parents make a half million dollars a year should have to wear Walmart clothes and drive a Ford Fiesta. It's a different lifestyle than most of us live. But for the parents who give their kids every material possession without teaching them a strong work ethic, they're not doing their children any favors.

It is a common misconception that all kids who have nice things are spoiled. My mom always said, "My children aren't spoiled- they're cherished." However, there are a lot of spoiled brats out there who do have all the nice things like you mentioned, and they give the nice kids who happen to have those things a bad name. My brother and I were not deprived of anything in our childhoods- we always had the nicest clothes and toys, different types of lessons, and when we were teenagers my mom made sure we had nice, new cars to drive, but we were always very well-mannered and not greedy. I agree- it is an unfair stereotype, but it is true very often too.

I could have everything I want. I am 17 and live in my own house, that my mother owns, for free. BUT there are conditions, this is only while I continue my college career. My mother gets me a lot of things but there are always conditions. I have designer clothes, BUT I can either choose from a few outfits at a time, or a lot of cheap ones. I choose the designer. I have nearly 150 jeans and pants, but they are within the past 4 years. I have the car I want, but I make the car payments. My mother doesn't exactly spoil me, she gives me things on conditions so I don't learn to take her for granted, and so I know the value of things, and how wonderful it is to say that something is actually mine, that I paid for it. I was always told I was spoiled growing up, from people that didn't even know my lifestyle, just because my mom owns a few businesses and real estate. I'm not spoiled. I'm thankful for everything I have. Having a lot of things doesn't make you spoiled, at least here in America. Compared to the African children that have no shoes and take care of their brothers and sisters b/c their mother died of AIDS, yes I'm spoiled. Are we spoiled compared to the celebrities? no.. its just a chain of spoiled people. And we aren't at the top, so people should stop complaining

First off, I have to say to the person who says "Spoilt" is not a word look it up. Jesus, why insult someone when you don't even know what you're talking about.
As to this question it's just the way it is. There are so many movies/TV shows that show teenagers this way. Some act like it and some don't. It is just the way it is. Don't worry about it.

I think the image is because of the spoilt teens that are like that. For example on My Super Sweet 16, these girls don't have a clue what it's like to have to work day in day out for a living- and they think the world evolves around them. But, just like every steriotype, not everyone with money is like that. For example, lots of people think teens are all trouble, when in actual fact many are not, its just the ones that are get recognised, so they are all seen as trouble...kind of unfair i guess.

well for one...there is no need for a teenager to have such expensive things..thats why kids today dont understand the value of money because once upon a time when cars like the one mentioned above were EARNED and worked hard for, kids now just recieve...but having said that..i also think that you can be spoiled and still be a well mannered person....but most teens who are spoiled tend to fall into that stereotype...

It is stereotyping. We probably get this misconception because some tv shows and movies make teens who have everything appear spoiled and bratty. It's like everything else, sometimes the stereotype fits but not always. That's good that your friend has material possessions but doesn't think he's better than others. Not everyone is like that.

because some of us have to work for every thing in life and still never reach that point. I am 17 and I am lucky to get ONE pair of NEW pants a year. the rest come from goodwill. the same things goes for shirts. I am 17 and I work, do college and high school at the same time, raise my younger siblings (my parents are at work so much of the time, I raise them more than my parents do), cook, clean, do laundry, and more. I don't even have my own car. I have a very old computer that I have to share with my brothers. and my cell phone won't even play any forms of music. I only have it for work purposes.
sometimes it is really hard on teens like me when others brag about how much they have. and we have so little. teens who have every thing like that is spoilt.

stereotype is when you take a group and assume all members of the group act a certain way b/c most of the members act that way. people think that kids w/ alot of material things are spoiled b/c most kids w/alot of material things are spoiled. just like you assumed "everyone" thinks kids like this are spoiled. when in fact some people don't base material goods as an indicator of a spoiled child.
it's just that a stereotype, it doesn't mean all, it simply suggests most. what really counts here is how you feel. he is your friend and the way you treat him will mean more than the way others do.
best wishes

It's a very simple concept, when you work hard for something you are grateful and not spoiled and know the value of that something.
When you are just given things, especially unnecessarily expensive things, then you are not grateful for them because you haven't actually worked for them and you don't appreciate the value of things as a result.
Most of these kids haven't actually worked for these things, they may not have a job or do a lot around the house or have great grades and extracurricular activities. So they are being rewarded for no reason.
