I drive a 2001 Honda CRV and I don't know why but every time I turn on the A/C it takes at least 5 minutes for it to cool down. At first the air is so hot that its almost impossible to sit in the car. does anyone know what I might do to fix this? I'm a college student so I don't have a lot of money right now to replace parts or anything like that. thanks :)

Chances are there is a slight leak in the Air conditioning and the air conditioning needs a refrigerant recharge. If so you may not have to do anything except recharge the system. (If it is the new type of refrigerant and not the old freon type they can inject some sealer that will reduce or eliminate minor leaks)

Take it to a service station that does air conditioning service and get an estimate of the cost to recharge the air conditioning system.

Recently (in MI) I saw that an oil change place would do an air conditioning recharge for $50 or less (maybe even $25 or less... whatever it was I made a mental note that it was cheap).

Air conditioning problems, Adam all those guy are right about what they say but there is something really important (small) you need to be sure before using the a/c first. Make sure you have enough refrigerant ( called 134a)you might be out of it. Buy one the cans in any auto supplie stores and fill it up all the way, in case you don't know how to do it just ask somebody in the store for help. If it does not help take it to the shop to fix it. ( you''ll pay at least $ 50 to have an inspection but you won;t have any worries more)

We have a CRV as well, and the AC on the car is actually for the sedans...here's a few tips.

1. In the engine bay, there are "cool" lines running to/fro the AC. Clean these, and wrap them with tape at the hardware store which will insulate them from the heat. Run your AV first to make sure you don't wrap the hot lines!

2. Open all windows to cool down first!

3. Shield on dash to keep it from superheating.

4. Put AC on MAX for first 5-10 minutes to not draw in outside air to accelerate cooling process.

5. You may also tint the rear windows to keep the glare/sun out.

Good Luck!

I agree this is normal and the recirculate will help. Though roll the window down start the car turn the AC on. As it blows the cooler air in the hot air will go out the window and should speed the process up. i use this quite frequently. You will also notice the opposite of this int he winter and your heater getting hot. Though for that it is best to keep windows up and turn the recirculate off as the places the air is let out of the car tend to be lower and will let the cold air out and help defrost the windows.

Make sure you have it set for internal air circulation. Make sure it is set to blow out the dash and not defrost or to feet.Turn the Fan on high for a couple minutes to displace the hot air in the system. Open your windows when you first turn it on until you feel the air blowing cold. Set fan to a 2 or 3 setting, should be okay.

Make sure the system is set to recirculate vs bring in fresh air. A/C works by cooling the same air over and over again. If you constantly bring in fresh hot air it doesn't work as well.

It's to be expected that it will take some time for the A/C to work it's magic.

It will always take a few minutes for it to start pumping cool air as it needs to compress the freon.

Best to leave the fan on low for a few and then turn it up once the air starts to cool off.

That's very normal. Putting the air on recycle might help because then it can recool the cooler air...but other than that, it's called summertime!
