There were a couple really awesome acts that I saw and had never heard of. The two that come to mind are F*ck, who I saw open for Sonic Youth and were really awesome. I ran out and bought their record the day after the show (unfortunately the record was kind of hit and miss, but it's really good when it's good) and a group called U.S. Maple that opened for Pavement. U.S. Maple didn't spark me to go buy a record, but they put on a really interesting show. They had a cool showmanship thing. They moved really oddly (I just remember the guitarist and the drummer having these incredibly intense scowls and playing really stiff until they would make these sharp movements. Just staring right through you, they were pretty freaky dudes) and played interesting music. I've never really seen anything like them, I'd love to see them again. I don't remember much about them (it was years ago), but they left an impression.
Oh, and I almost forgot a group called the Monotonix that opened for the Silver Jews. They were a three piece without a bassist (drummer, guitarist, and singer). They had this kind of classic rock sound and the singer was all over the place. I bought two of their records on the spot but they were pretty DIY and I received them scratched, but they put on one hell of a show.
Imaad Wassif was a really nice suprise too. Unfortunately I liked his music in the format they played live better (with a band as opposed to accoustic and solo), but the cd is pretty good. Great live though. I liked him much better than the act he opened for, Jeremy Enigk (who was pretty good, interesting).

Back in 2000 or so, I went to see Modest Mouse at Irving Plaza, and didn't even know who was opening, but they completely blew me away.

Turns out, it was a little band called THE SHINS who were touring on their first record, "Oh, Inverted World." Way, way, way before "Garden State" gave their career a huge boost.

It was one of the only times I've ever purchased a CD at a show from a band I wasn't going to the show to see!

I saw a Canadian political metal band open for Propagandhi. GFK was the name. They were pretty good, I liked them a lot. The other band that opened for Propagandhi had a girl lead singer and it was a metal band. She really sucked. A lot of the audience went to the bar or as far from the stage as they could.

I saw Pelican open for Opeth a couple of years ago. Never heard of Pelican before but they were really good. My husband and I bought their cd at the show. They are just an instrumental band, and pretty amazing at that!

Early 1990's Pearl Jam opened for Red Hot Chilli Peppers in Chicago. I think it was at the Metro.

Saw ZZ Top on the Recycler tour and had the Black Crowes opening for them. After that show thought they were pretty good and went to the record shop and bought Shake Your Moneymaker.

Back in the 90's, Mr Big opened for Rush. Although some of their songs were cheesy, they had some great musicians. (Paul Gilbert on guitar and Billy Sheehan on bass)
