I was just wondering the exact same thing!They didn't have space for a separate category ;) after all some people cannot recognise the difference between rock and pop,like in the rap and hip hop category ;

Because rock keeps changing into different things. Classic rock is now punk then alternative and indie now we have pop rock and power punk. Take band in a bubble, Cartel is now a pop rock band but they don't even want to be. Rock has more poppy sounds.

they can be in the same category because pop isnt really a style of music, it simply means POPular music. many bands (such as those that play rock music) can be classed as pop, if they sell well enough! the media (tv and music magazines) usually class pop music as a style of music, but this isnt accurate. today they state pop music is anything that generally isnt too heavy on instrument use- eg often dance based using electronic sounds (keyboards), a minimal usage of other instruments such as guitar, and more of an emphasis on vocals than anything, and often with a happy tone! :D

i know what you mean. and it's irritating. i guess the bands that we think are "pop" call themselves "rock" when really they aren't. so if i made a band and the songs i wrote sounded pop, but i put it out as a rock record, then they'd call it rock. but i absolutely love rock, and pop should go away. i don't know where, just, away.

i know, it's insulting to find the greastest genre in the world, rock, put with something so vast as pop, which should be called poop coz it sucks.

they always do that, even in hmv and every other music store out there...get's on my nerves like no tomorrow. can you believe that they put all the punk music in the pop&rock section? punk is anti-social and offensive, it shouldn't even be near conformist airheads like britney spears!!

In the 60's they were basically the same. But then they branched off from each other.
