I have taught my children to swim beginning at nine months,
as I have also taught adults over 50, and many in-between.
A person is never too old or young to learn to swim, and it is
very important, as it could save their life. Your friend probably
has not been exposed to water enough. If you are an accomplished swimmer, you could help through the shallow-
end skills(floating- back and front, stroke development, basic
survival skills), but I would contact a Water Safety Instructor,
or a lifeguard to train her in deep water treading for the safety
of both of you. Let her know she can learn, and maybe the
two of you can train to be lifeguards together when you are
fifteen. We need more dedicated guards, and it is a reward-
ing experience. I have been a lifeguard for 34 years. I am
a 50 year old mother of seven, who just got her eyebrow
pierced. She is lucky she has such a good and concerned
friend as you, so the two of you - go for it!

Age is not a problem to learn swimming. Technique? Not a big deal. All you have to do is to push water under and along your body with your hands (one by one or in the same time) and move your legs in the same time, like you want to push more water behind you. A problem might be if you are afraid of water having fear of swimming. If you have fear, then start learning only in water that is not deeper than your body (neck). Go to deeper water only after you are very sure you can swimm for longer time, long enough to get back where from you left and can rest. Good luck!

You shouldn't try to teach her yourself. That is a bad idea for many reasons. She could take lessons in an adult swimming class if there is one around, or private lessons. Most lifeguards can teach lessons, so she should talk with one and see if they would spend a couple hours one day with her to improve her swimming. She really shouldn't be embarrassed though. Swimming is just another sport and like any sport without proper instruction you can't get good at it. I am 21 and I can't catch a football, can't hit a baseball, and can't skateboard without falling on my butt.

If you are a good swimmer go ahead and try teaching her. make sure you teach her in a shallow pool though to avoid any risks! If she feels more comfortable with you than in a group than chances are better that she will learn if you teach her. She is not too old to learn and there are plenty of classes at the YMCA and local community centers that can help her reach her goal and will contain other children her age. Tell her not to be embarassed or scared, it's not uncommon and she shows great courage by wanting to learn!!!
Good luck ( =

Never too old to learn... there are adult swim classes out there as well. If you are a strong swimmer you should be able to teach her...
Just teach her to tread water in a shallow pool before anything else.

that's actually a fear problem. she's not too old to learn, and she probably doesnt even NEED to take lessons!
ask her to tread at the shallow end and then SLOWLY move her towards the middle... then deep. keep her away from the sides cuz she will try to grab at it. however, make sure you have an adult or a float nearby if she starts to freak out.
good luck!
