Soccer is already a pro-sport in North America, not a very well paid one yet (well, for 90% of players anyway), but still a pro-sport. As for it catching on...it is the #1 participant game played in the US and Canada but falls down when it comes to the adult level. I can't see it ever replacing the NFL or basketball in the psyche of Americans, but it is certainly in a growth pattern at the moment and any type of success in the World Cup (semis or better) will see the game progress even faster. As for Beckham's arrival, I think it will be as important to the game in the US as Pele's was back in the 70's., especially now that he is back in McLaren's English squad.

Firstly, i'm getting annoyed that people have the impression Beckham is God. There is no reason why his arrival will draw interest, because unless networks start airing matches just to see Beckham, there will be no difference.

Also, Americans seem to see soccer as a boring sport, and the arrival of Beckham won't change this perception.

I doubt it Pele tried to make soocer popular 30 years ago but it may have a chance with Beckham's star power. However, the United States is not so fond of soccer it is not a soccer nation like the rest of the globe so this is just a lab experiment a five year lab experiment.I respect David Beckham's risk taking style to make soccer more popular to the American youth however, some kids got other things on their minds than soccer so who knows!

it incredibly is starting to be, and could hit a improve spurt simply by fact the 1st era of soccer young little ones( interior the previous ten years adolescents soccer has been the main time-honored young little ones interest interior the U. S.) come of age. previous generations have not totally understood the sport and for this reason have not accompanied it properly. Now that the MLS is attracting extra useful gamers and the commonly used of play has a great deal more suitable those "young little ones" now grown, and having a extra useful understand-how of the sport, could have a extra useful interest to stay with with each and every of the trimmings of a high quality league. whilst i became a volunteer coach and participant, not one of the mummy and dad on my adolescents communities understood one ingredient approximately soccer. Now adolescents coaches are paid professionals and ninety% of the mummy and dad are properly suggested. this might bode properly for soccer interior the subsequent era. Peace

Lol at Jean-Marc's statistics for European football attendances.

Those figures are WAY off. Your source must have average out ALL football games, even minor leagues (which vastly outnumber the top games) where attendances are a couple of thousand per game.

Average attendance at a Premier League game is some 35,000. Bundesliga is 40,000. Manchester United averaged 70,000 last year.

I think foosball, if it ever makes the prime time will be a TV phenomenon only on the Hispanic broadcast cable channels. Soccer is basically a little boy sport that you grow up with.

At the beginning yes...but don't fool yourself, sports in the US is not like in Europe. Here it is a family thing not a "fanatic" thing. Anyway just to let you know guys soccer is not that far in rating compare to Europe.
Average attendance per game in the last season
USA: 15,000
Italy: 17,000
Spain : 22,000
UK: 17,500
France: 13,500
Remember: not many people watch games of lower ranked teams in Europe. How many people would attend a Chievo-Reggina game???Think!!!
Stadium in Europe are just smaller....you think they have more people in games
