Nothing is free. Period.
You MUST spend resources just to stay alive. You consume calories. You use time. You must expend effort (however small) to notice and appreciate things. Your brain alone uses 30% of the calories you consume daily. See how far you get when you aren't feeding it fuel on a constant basis.
Even if none of the above costs applied, there is also OPPORTUNITY COST. You cannot do everything at once. If you have a choice between riding a roller coaster and seeing a movie, doing one will cost you the opportunity to do the other. At least temporarily. Some things are even more mutually exclusive - sometimes you cannot have one friend without losing another, and it's certainly difficult to be hot and cold at the same time.
Take some of the examples others have cited. A person has a good family life. This probably required no small amount of effort (therefore, not free). This undoubtedly came at the cost of doing other things than spending time with them (therefore, not free). It may have been a very good purchase, if those other lost things were of comparatively little value. BUT IT WAS STILL NOT FREE.
So go ahead. Make a good exchange. But do not be blind or ignorant about it. You ARE making an exchange. That is simply the way things are.

My grandfather died last week. He left behind a wife of 54 years, 20 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. There is not a single divorce in the family and everyone gets along really well. He didn't have to pay for any of the important things that resulted in such a condition, it was just love and devotion. I would say that he was a very contented and happy man at the end of his life and would not have traded what he had for all the money in the world, and he was not a wealthy man in a financial sense. Yes, the best things in life are free.

The which potential of life is to discover meaningfulness interior the meaningless. What i think of which potential is to make something out of no longer something, the connections we make as quickly as we combine our lives with the lives of others. The bond between family members friends and enthusiasts. it incredibly is the which potential of life, to alter into significant to somebody else. rather unrelated yet i like this quote approximately marriage, it incredibly is from the action picture "we could dance?" "we want a witness to our lives. simply by fact what does every person life incredibly propose? yet in a marriage, you're promising to care approximately each and every little thing. the sturdy issues, the undesirable issues, the damaging issues, the mundane issues... all of it, continually, daily. you're asserting 'Your life won't pass neglected simply by fact i visit word it. Your life won't pass un-witnessed simply by fact i visit undergo witness'."

the first time my newborns smiled at me.
time and conversation with a true Friend.
Wyoming sunsets.
hummingbirds in my garden.
squealing laughter of the children in the yard.
all of these things are free Divine gifts for which Ive done nothing to deserve.
yet these are a few of the most valuable things in my life .maybe they mean nothing to someone else.
It,s a matter of priority, depends on what is important to you.
most important of all I have the peace that passeth understanding that comes from my relationship with God.now you can argue that I paid a price for that by my effort to build a relationship with him but no way as large a price as that ,that jesus paid for me to have that relationship.
peace of GOD ><>

Some of my favorite things have been free - the sound of children laughing, the glitter of an unobstructed night sky, the feeling when you turn a cartwheel, meeting someone's eyes and connecting, the sound of waves hitting the shore, an unexpected and unearned sudden hug or kiss on the cheek....

This is indeed very true..... what it means in my view is as follows
The universe is running on some auto-mode and we are just a minuscule part of it.... as a result most of the essentials for our life is provided for by this great system..... and all that we add to it by our endeavour is like some minor tweaking to suit our desired state of being..... but our bloated ego makes us see these few alterations and arrangements as great achievements and advancement and therefore we place a high price on it.

It's true the best things in life are free. But they are the things we take advantage of the most.

best things in life are free <- false dilemma.
best things in life are free , air is free, best thing in life = air.
clearly you can see, its an undistributed middle of syllogism.
