So I'm wanting to get my first ear piercing. I've seen some guys around school with a single earring on the cartilage of their left ear. (like this http://www.schmuck-piercing.de/images/div/ohr-cartilage.jpg ).

I've heard that it can get infected really easily and look disgusting. What's your recommendation?

Right ear means your gay, but that was more of a thing in the 80's. Nobody really cares anymore. I have 4 holes in the cartilage in my left ear and a hole that is 9/16th's of an inch wide in my right lobe. But do me a favor, if you're not planning on doing it your self, get it done in a piercing studio where they will use a needle and not a gun. Piercing guns actually break the cartilage in your ear when they pierce it, so it leaves you with nasty scar tissue. It will basically leaves you with a big red lump on your ear. Also piercing guns aren't clean. There's really no way to clean them. See it actually pierces you using the earring so there’s no needle involved. The problem is that little pieces of flesh and blood get onto the part of the gun that touches your ear. Soooo there are nasty tiny pieces of other peoples skin/blood on the gun that’s going to pierce your ear! That makes bad infection waaaay more likely. And then there’s the jewelry they put in it. To put it simply, they usually use cheap crap. Which also can lead to bad infection. I got my cartilage pierced with a gun 3 years ago and they still hurt everyday... and I have some really bad scar tissue from it. If you're planning on having it professionally done, go to a studio. You'd be better off doing it your self than having it done with a gun.

I would totally rock it. It is definitely no longer a gay thing, regardless of ear. However, I do caution from personal experience, be careful of it being infected. In many cases, keloids form. This is a bump either on the front side or the back side of the ear where the piercing is.

It's cool though.

In the old days (the 80's and 90's...Jesus! I'm getting old...)...
If you placed an earring anyway on your "right" ear...(no, dummy...your OTHER right ear...!!!) then you would be considered a man declaring his love for other men...
This rule of thumb was invented by a small group of homophobic conspiracists, who needed to easily identify those whom they could beat up for no good reason...(back in those days, they didn't have the advanced social policy of "Don't ask, Don't Come Out of the Closet, You Challenger To Our Man/Woman Time Honored Tradition of Marriages That End Up In Divorce, Anyway...!!! ")
But now that we're in the 21st Century (a Jetson's enlightened society, if you will...) there are no more cultural "earring-placement" taboos, or as I like to call it...
"Sexual-preference Earring Placement Advertising...(SEPA)
So put that damn earring anywhere you want, and walk tall and proud in a glowing aura of self sexual security...

You secret is safe with me....

When I was in college / high school - I thought it was totally hot.

I still think it's pretty cool.

However, having had my ear pierced up there 2 times and taking it out for good 2 times, I can say it's a pain in the rump to keep up with. Mostly because, when you talk on the phone or sleep it irritates the peircing while it's trying to heal.

But, i have friends who still have theirs in.

I guess it's a different experience for everyone.

Good Luck! :)

It is your ear so it won't hurt any body but you. Think about it for a little bit. What are the negatives; it could get infected, people could think you are gay, people will make fun of you, it will hurt or whatever else you have to add. Then think about the positives; you will be like some other guys and blank blank blank. With hegatives out ruling positives I think you should not pierce you ear. However it is not up to me.

dont get it done at a place in the mall or some crappy place like that. go to a real piercer. like a tattoo/piercing place.

you can get pierced anywhere. no one cares what ear you have what piercings in anymore.

just make sure you clean it and if it ever looks like its getting infected (and i'm not talking a little red and pusy cause that pretty much is a given) then just go to the dr or back to the piercer and they will tell you what to do.

you can do anything you want to.
problem is not everyone writes in to answers to know for sure what is acceptable and what is not. so everywhere you go with the earring you will have all kinds of people wondering about you because most people just dont know the rules.

It's perfectly fine is that's what you want. As long as you get it done at a reputable place and keep it clean you have little chance of infection.

Once it is healed you can take it out. I haven't worn earings in mine in probably 8 years.
