well my son is 5 months old.since he was a little premature we did a hearing test for him(BERA) wen he was 3 months.the test results showed perfectly normal hearing in one ear and moderate loss in another ear.the doctor has asked to repeat the test wen he is 9 months.he responds to loud sounds n sometimes even to small sounds.i just want to know if he will need a hearing aid later in his life or this is normal n also will he have any problem in talking?will the next test turn to be normal?

My son was a micro preemie and we also had this kind of test done. The doctors told us that many things can effect the tests such as a fussy baby, wax buildup, too much movement...etc. I wouldn't get too worked up about it yet and take him for the reexamination and see what they say then.

Bera Test For Hearing

I think either way you should learn sign lauguage. My niece passed the test when she was born, but when she hadnt talked really just loud screams by her 3rd birthday, my sister worried. They tried hearing aids, and nothing. But remember she passed that test, and had no real trama since. The good news is she seems a totally normal 7 yearold now, the only thing is her parents dont have to LISTEN to the little mermaid for the 1000th time. Sign is really really easy to learn, it soon becomes so natural that you dont know you did it. Most signs make alot of sense. For instance to say cat you demonstrate a wisker on your cheek. I have been teaching my children and my 13 month old can say milk, more, want, cat, juice, sad, tired, mad, cookie, chicken and well you get the point. So here are some websites, I think since even the doctors dont know too much about this you should learn sign as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side, the earlier the better, and if you dont need it, its not going to hurt (both of my children can hear). Oh and I learn as I go. I have a refrence book and learn from needing a word I dont know.

Blood Test

Most test results are normal.
If not, they will follow up with him, and send him to an otolaryngologist [ ear, nose, and throat doctor. ]
IF he has any hearing loss, if, they will decide if a hearing aid will help. Early intervention wiill help protect from furthur deterioration of hearing and allow him to develop speech at
the normal age.
I know several hearing impaired grownups, and those with early intervention have pretty normal speech. One of them was first violin in the state orchestra!
