[edit] Prefertilization effects
The combined Pill primarily prevents pregnancy by preventing ovulation. In women who take the pills correctly, ovulation is prevented in 98-99% of cycles. Forgetting to take one or more pills increases ovulation rates; one study found skipping two pills in a row resulted in ovulation in 29% of cycles.[46] (In women not taking the Pill, pregnancy occurs in approximately 25% of ovulatory cycles.)[47]

In the event of breakthrough ovulation, secondary contraceptive mechanisms are believed to come into play. Proposed secondary mechanisms active before fertilization include thickening of cervical mucus, which can prevent or slow sperm entry into the uterus, and changes in tube transport inhibiting sperm migration to the fallopian tubes.[48]

[edit] Postfertilization effects
Mechanisms that act after fertilization are controversial; according to those who define pregnancy as beginning at fertilization such mechanisms make the method abortifacient.

If you define life at conception, will you change your mind on accepting birth control? Now that you have the knowledge that conception CAN occur?

the question is, now that you have the info that conception can occur, do you still accept the pill as contraception? I ask because I keep reading how the pill os OK because conception does not occur. Well, now that you know that it DOES occur, are you willing to denounce the pill?

Good point - and don't forget about in vitro fertilization (test tube babies) - many extra embryoes are made and then discarded. Pro-lifers should oppose that too.

I think that people will cling to whatever notion they want to, no matter how irrational it is. Some people don't care about the fact that some women are ill-prepared, psychologically and/or financially, to raise a child. They think that nature should just take its course and a woman should conceive and bear a child she's not prepared to raise. Never mind the fact that not only would contraception not cause suffering, but it would prevent it, as well!

Nope...it is still a better choice than killing MILLIONS of babies through abortion...
Abstinence is best...but the selfish I want it now and I can do what I want mentality does not leave much room for better choices.Abstinence also eliminates sexually transmitted disease...brings the morality of the country wayyyy up and can give people a focus on bettering themselves and their country through the individual.
Since abstinence is not a choice the PRO-CHOICE people care to make then there is little left to prevent the murder of innocent babies through abortion...birth control then remains one of the only true options.

BTW...most of us choose to know the facts BEFORE we make the stand.
