It is cuter and more personal. Like people call me Stevers for a cuter form of Steve. Sort of like Marianne_Not_Ginger is a cuter form of Marianne, even though it is longer.

I have no idea... probably for the same reason Bill is short for william and Bob is short for Robert and Dick is short for Richard.... People are a bunch of schmegeggies....

it's a lighter, more informal name or form. E.g.....jake sounds less formal than jacob and jess less formal than jessica.
