I don't know the technical terms for this phenomenon, but i can tell you that the sky is the reflection from the ocean and it has to do with light properties that absorb certain colors and reflect others. In this case the "sky" reflects all the colors in the spectrum except the color blue which, hence the reason the "sky" is "blue".So there you are a Mickey mouse attempt to explain it to a 5 year old, assuming they know what spectrum means...

Sun's rays is actually a white light which breaks into a prism or a rainbow thing when it hits the earth's atmosphere. Blue color being the shortest wavelength tend to be scattered most unlike other color hence we see blue sky.

The colors that make up light have different wavelengths. The shortest wavelength, blue, is the most easily dispersed. So when sunlight hits the earths atmoshere, blue gets scattered the most, which is why the sky is blue.

Diffraction.
As the sun's rays enter the Earths atmosphere they become separated into different colours.
Light consists of many visible colours, which you can see in a rainbow, but the colours are scattered by molecules of air as the light filters down to Earth and in daytime the predominant one is blue.
The angle of sunlight changes later in the day, which changes the effect, and makes blue fade out. As blue fades in the late afternoon/evening, yellow and red become stronger.
