...you're talking about one of my favorite contemporary sci-fi thrillers (with a unflinching foothold in science TRUTH), and one of the most underappreciated films to come out of the late '80's.
"Miracle Mile", from 1988, starred Anthony Edwards as a young jazz musician, who on a chance meeting at a museum, falls in love with a young girl (Mare Winningham), who works at a local all-night diner. Setting up a late night date with each other, the young man, as a result of a power outage, is late for that date; upon quick dispatch to the diner, he arrives too late to meet with the girl, as she finishes her shift and leaves, understandibly quite upset.
Waiting around the diner, in deciding what to do next, he picks up a random call from a nearby phone booth; the frantic voice on the other end of the line, a man at a missle silo, proclaims that "we have launched our nuclear wad, and we'd get the return package in an hour and ten".
From here, the young man desperately tries to convince everyone in the greater Los Angeles area, that nuclear armageddon is at hand....all the while, attempting a frantic search for his new-found love.....
As previously mentioned, the film was notably underappreciated, probably as a result of a lack of advertising; in fact, the original poster for the film, if i rfecall correctly, barely exhued the subject matter of the film (I, myself, originally checked out the film on a curious whim...and was most surprised), and as a result, many people passed it up.....a shame, as the film is most gripping, paranoid and absolutely enthralling!!!
MGM Home Video released the film on DVD, a few years ago.
