My boys are 13 and 15. They get allowance based on chores they do. usually $20 a week each.

I don't give allowances. I do buy extras according to what they do around here. You do nothing, you get nothing.
My kids are always happy when I surprise them with something.
Kids are supposed to clean their own rooms and help with other chores. When they move on their own, Nobody is going to pay them to clean their own homes. When they are older, I tell them to get a part time job for spending money. They appreciate it more and spend more wisely when they have to actually earn it.

when I do have kids, I will start giving an allowance when they are 4 and on their birthday every year, I will raise it a buck
