What do you mean by best? By a pure numbers standpoint, its A-rod, by leadership and clutch abilities its Jeter. The one who encompasses both its Pujols. Yes I humbly give props to Ortiz.

A-Rod easily has the best stats over the last 10 years.

Here are some stats for players from 1997-now. (Ichiro and Pujols did not start until 2001, but Pujols still has better numbers than Ortiz. Big Papi did not get the at-bats during his years with the Twins.)

A-Rod - 1254 R, 1878 H, 447 HR, 1266 RBI, 226 SB, 785 BB

Bonds - 1064 R, 1289 H, 413 HR, 967 RBI, 133 SB, 1406 BB

Griffey - 803 R, 1265 H, 340 HR, 919 RBI, 72 SB, 608 BB

Ortiz - 665 R, 1107 H, 242 HR, 805 RBI, 6 SB, 583 BB

Pujols - 784 R, 1226 H, 265 HR, 798 RBI, 36 SB, 522 BB

Ichiro - 719 R, 1440 H, 66 HR, 392 RBI, 252 SB, 302 BB

As much as I dislike him, there's no way it could be anyone but Barry Bonds.

During that time, he hit about 400 homers, won 4 MVP awards, and put together some of the best individual seasons in major league history. In 2004, he had 232 walks - 232! - along with an unbelievable .609 OBP, both of which are records. Bonds also set the second-highest OBP in a season during 2002. Finally, he of course broke the single-season home run record with 73.

I'm not a Bonds fan, and my belief is that he cheated. However, there's no doubt that he has been the best, most dominant player in baseball over the last decade, and it's not even that close.

Mariano Rivera. No one has shut down more people in the last 10 years than he has. He also has 4 rings and he's a big part of those 4 rings. He's not doing to good this year because he's old now and on the decline.
Ortiz has come on strong the last 5-6 years but not 10 years. Same with Pujols he's only been playing for 4 years. The best position player from 1997-2007 has to be Jeter. Great leader, great player and he has 4 rings also. AROD needs to get some rings before we declare him the best
BTW about Bonds, he may be a prick but he has never tested positive for steroids so just because you hate him does not mean he did roids.

In my opinion, no one that juices should be considered. If ever there was a reason for the asterisk, Bonds is it.

I think to lay claim to "the Best MLB player" title the guy should be formidable on offense and defense. A-Rod is a good suggestion I guess.

The real question is- does he have to lead his team to a World Series Championship? Given that, what about Pujols? He's not even close to peaking and he helped his team win a Series...

I hate to say it but probably Barry Bonds. Became first player to have 600 homeruns and 500 steals. Surpassed 700 homeruns. And hit 73 homeruns in a season. A bunch of MVPs to.

It's Alex Rodriguez.
Bonds should also be taken into consideration because he still put up amazing numbers even with all of the walks he took. If people actually pitched to him, he would likely have greater numbers and anyone.

Bonds or Alex Rodriguez, take your pick.

Judging by MVP Awards, Bonds.

For a results-oriented question like this, methodologies do not matter, only outcomes.

Derek Jeter. He is captain of the New York Yankees, and has won four World Series titles. He does it all, and is not just a numbers compiler, ala A-Rod.
