Jordan averaged 22.9 shots for his career. Idiot.
Lebron averaged 20.9 shots for his career. Which means that he's had more than several games where he's taken more than 21 shots. Which accordingly means, these games were not rare.
Referring to a SLAM magazine from a rookie year is hardly evidence for anything. First, it's highly improbably that Kobe's stuck with the same immaturity that he had as an 18 year old kid. Secondly, it's SLAM magazine. People show off in SLAM. The title refers to a flashy move, and their articles are written with the intent to hype good players. Third, being "the best" does not correlate to scoring the most points.
Anyway. Kobe is a prolific scorer and markets love prolific scorers. More scoring equals more highlights equals jersey sales.

first of all the kids in China dont know how to play basketball
0 gold medals and counting
1 nba star
yeah, so lets keep china's basketball iq in mind here.
Kobe has some cute moves, but he has to take 33 shots to put up 2 highlights when guys like Lebron and Jordan rarely shot over 21 shots in a game, they have, but it was rare.
American fans understand the game of basketball and they know how to spot a player who is out for his own scoring average because Kobe himself in SLAM magazine in 1997 boldly claimed that he would be the best ever, he has since backed away from that statement saying that he would be satisfied with one more championship.

Easy. Fans want to watch exciting, skillful players. Kobe is by far the best offensive player in the league. His game, style, clutch factor and will to win is unparalleled in the NBA. People can hate on him all they want but deep down, if the score was close down the stretch, every fan in the league knows Kobe will come down and slit your team's throat.

Since I live here in China, have for the last year, I have a different insight then most here.
The Chinese people, for the most part, are pretty positive, while the American people, for the most part are pretty cynical.
It's all in the cultural differences.
Peace

Many people love Kobe in U.S. I think he's the best layer in the NBA right now and so do many of my friends. He's an exciting player to watch on the court. In my opinion, he's the best shooter in the the NBA.
