Winning their independence.
Before 1960, all but a few African nations were colonies of European nations. (The exceptions were Algeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, South Africa, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone.)
By 1970, all but a few African nations were politically independent. (The exceptions were Rhodesia/Zimbabwe, South-West Africa/Namibia, Mocambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, Sao Tome e Principe, and I believe the Comoros.)
1960 was the biggest transition year, with most of Francophone Africa plus Nigeria and Kenya, and I think Congo-Belge/Zaire/DRC, becoming independent.
The wars for independence were costly and brutal, with most of the weapons initially in the hands of the colonizers. Increasingly, the colonizers sought negotiations, probably in response to the determination of the liberation fighters and their Soviet-bloc weapons.

the main problem for the african nations in 1960 was their indipendence from the colonisiator system.so the most part of africa was invaded by european colonisiator, the south africa was in the custody of brittany, the north part of africa:algeria, marok were in the custody of france and so many other african territory,so this was the main problem for african people at that times, and Nelson Mandela was the man that raised the voice and raised african people to reach for the independency of their country,to fight for their rights and their purposes,so for this reason Nelson Mandela for his hard tries was given the Nobel award.

Pretty much the same problems. War, civil war, famine, drought, and today with the addition of HIV to the list it is even worse. No offense intended but, what else would you expect from a nation of people that are uneducated, poor, and still live on dirt floors? Its a little better in Mexico but not much and thats whu they all want to come to America. Can't blame them but it doesn't excuse crossing the border illegaly.Africans illegaly cross borders everyday to escape. I say we should either fix the godd*mn problem or let them just die instead of making them linger on and on and on.

Political instability - many of them were trying to rebuild their political infrastructure after gaining their independence from colonial powers, i.e.,Belgium, France, England.
