During the 1980's Mrs Thatcher's majorities were so large because the anti-Conservative vote was split almost equally between Labour and the SDP/Liberal Alliance. This effectively gave the Conservatives a free run in seats they would otherwise have struggled in.
If you really want to get rid of Labour, rather than register a protest vote, the Conservatives are the ONLY party to vote for throughout most of the United Kingdom. If you vote for UKIP, BNP, the English Nationalists you effectively split the right-wing anti-Labour vote and "Smiler" Brown and New Labour will win once again.

No, why give the Tories the chance to screw things up even more? Let Labour sort out their own mess.

Ha ha. That really makes sense doesn't it? Punish a party that has done a pretty good job for Britain by putting back into power a party that caused a series of economic downturns, 3 million unemployed and massive social division!

I'll vote for anyone who proves beforehand s/he can and will work as a parliamentary representative a priori and not as a self-seeking, fast-talking, self-promoting, self-serving, huge salary-claiming, gold-plated pension-aimer looking for a sinecure job in a spineless government, with grace-and favour home thrown in, posh cars, clerical assistants (to blame) and expensive worldwide holidays, unearned community status and vast official expenses as a matter of course. Ergo, hardly likely to be voting, am I. Unless the BNP come up with the goods.

Nope, I'll be voting for the SNP. That'll screw Labour even more. And since I vote SNP in every election, I won't be affecting my conscience to do it either.
