My father has 2-year-old gas in his Harley, and it sounds like crap. He's trying to run it out by using it up and adding new gas whenever he can. Is he damaging his bike? Should he just drain all the old gas out? Thanks.

He used it last year, but has never used up the entire gas tank in a season of riding...

Frankly I would. It can't be helping the motor any. All you wind up doing is diluting the bad gas and prolonging the agony. If he's worried about "wasting" the fuel, tell him to use it up in the lawn mower.

Yeah old gas can be one of the worst things you can do to a healthy bike. Condensation can build up in the tank and get water in the gas and in the motor! Never a good idea. And yes running old gas can do serious damage to the motor. If he only did it this once it will most likely be fine be Tell him to siphon it out anyway just to be safe. And tell him to get some STABLE it a fluid that keeps protects the gas for long periods of time like while sitting over winter.. You can fine it at autozone or Pep boys or anywhere automotive store. Well the best thing to do is to let the gas run out before you store it and take the battery out put it on the tender and to spray you carbs with some cleaner if you have carbs.

rc1 honda is right about the fuel stabilizer only its spelled STA-BIL on the label. your dad didn't hurt the engine but the carb will be dirty & stopped up from the rust particles that formed in the tank & the varnish that formed in the gas. he should have taken the gas line off the carb & drained the tank into a can then put a filter in the line anywhere between tank & the carb, the petcock has a screen on top but it wont catch the small stuff, make sure the filter dosnt touch the engine or it will rub a hole in it eventually. if its a newer fuel injection Harley it already has a filter, change it. it will probably clear up by itself after only 2 years of sitting. the next time he parks it for a while put some stabil in it & make sure it doesnt have gasahol in it gasahol is hydroscopic meaning it draws water from the air stick to pure gasoline as long as its still available

That gas is bad! dont run it it will cause numerous posible problems. drain it, add some new gas and shake it up and drain that. until it looks clean. once gas has gone bad stabil wont help. You also want to clean out the fuel line, and any other accesible fuel system parts. Add a fuel system cleaner to the first couple tanks when you get it running. gas starts to break down after 90 days and staybil must be added when the gas is still good. Good luck, and safe riding. p.s. check the plugs and change any fluids before starting.

Drain it!
Old gas contains water form condensation.
Also, as gas gets old, it breaks down and forms almost a varnish inside the small idle jets of the carb, eventually blocking them off to the point where the bike won't idle until you clean them out.

the gas should be drained, and the intank filter cleaned. the carbs should also be drained as water from humidity will for m and settle in the tank, the will create a sludge. if not properly cleaned, could cause internal carb problems, and also possably valve damage,

Drain it!! When gas sits it turns to sludge. Not good. Clean out the fuel system and the carb.

drain all the old gas, and get some carburator cleaner so you could clear the carb from sediments of the gasoline, stop riding it until you do this, also have the filter and the oil changed too
