if the dictator was a socialist with ideas similar to theirs....say, someone like Hugo Chavez? I think liberals would rather live under a socialist dictatorship rather than the current system of democracy that we have, which often times elects conservatives. What do you think?

tangerine, if they are communists, then yes. a democratically elected communist quickly becomes a dictator-for-life. ask some iranians if they would rather be living under the Shah today, yet he was put back in power by the US also.

Actually, we DON'T support dictatorships. You may also be interested to hear that Sandra Day O'Connor once said that our country was slowly turning into a dictatorship. (Who would ever think that a Republican-appointed former Supreme Court justice would say such a thing about a Republican-dominated government?) Also, I don't support Chavez's policies, but many people here seem to forget the fact that Chavez was DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED. Not only that, but during the early 70s, the CIA helped overthrow the democratically-elected leftist leader of Chile, Salvador Allende, and helped replace him with a right-wing dictator, Augusto Pinochet, who became notorious for his various human rights abuses. Should the US overthrow democratically-elected leaders of other countries and replace them with dictators who are friendlier to US business interests? Somehow, such a concept just seems un-American!
EDIT: Actually, Iran is far from Communist. It is a theocracy, and the theocracy came about, because it had the support of a lot of Iranians who were disgruntled with the Shah's westernizing, secularizing policies. There are probably a lot of Iranians who are still glad that the Shah was overthrown and replaced by the theocratic regime.

The problem is not to live under a socialist system, it is more to live under a dictatorship... ANd this wether Libs or Rep, it will happen sooner than later... When your country will pass the immigration bill (just wait and see it pass), you will have made the last move on the chess board to position your country as a weak democracy... And then the next step will come to mind isn't it? Of course everybody will be under the impression that nothing has changed but it is not reality...
Bush impress educated people by manipulating information to motivate the Iraq invasion, so they already done it once, and anybody think that they will never do it again? Good luck everybody, we will need it!

That's a big assumption. You are wrong. Of course democrats want democracy, it is in the name. Unlike Bush who hasn't ever taken the interests of the general population into consideration when making decisions. It's all about funding from organizations and personal agenda with him.

If by liberals you mean Cindy Sheehan, then yes, you're correct. But if by liberals you mean the majority of Americans who proudly put dozens of new, moderate Democrats into office last November, then no, you are not correct.

What liberals seem to understand a bit better than conservatives is that the strength of this country comes from having both right and left wings being of equal strength.
The American Bald Eagle wouldn't fly very far or high with just one wing, be it left or right, no matter how strong it was.

I think there are few if any sane Americans that would want to live under a dictatorship. I think that if you accuse a political party of such, you are immature, and don't really understand free speech.

They obviously think that conservatives should not be permitted to use broadcast facilities or hold public office. They don't say that; it's just obvious. I assume they would prefer a one-party system. They certainly don't like our bipartism set-up.

Democracy is a liberal idea. Conservatives want to take us back to the days of monarchy where wealth and influence means more than justice and equality.
