Write each condition and then multiply:
== "3 less than twice x" = 2x - 3
== "2 more than the quantity 3 times x" = 3x + 2
So (2x-3)(3x+2) = 6x^2 - 5x - 6 = (D)

The question is asking which answer represents the product that's described. It seems as though the interpretation of this product is where the trouble lies.
"3 less than twice x" = 2x - 3
"2 more than the quantity 3 times x" = 3x + 2
If those make sense, then the product of them is
(2x - 3)(3x + 2) = ???

well that really is a confusing statement...
2x - 3... thats the 3 less than twice x bit
3x + 2... thats the 2 more than the quantity 3 times x bit
multiply them together and you get...
(2x - 3)(3x + 2)
6x^2 + 4x - 9x - 6
6x^2 -5x -6
so the answer would be d.
But i totally agree with you, this question is very poorly worded and without the answers to guide me to the solution im not sure what they would be asking for!

3 less than twice x is 2x-3
2 more than quantity 3 times x is 3x+2
you want the product of these two so
(2x-3)*(3x+2)
use the FOIL muliplication (First, Outside, Inside, Last)
6x^2 + 4x - 9x -6
combine the 4x and -9x
6x^2 - 5x - 6
The answer is D.

I'm going to explain step-by-step so you don't get confused.
1)"3 less than twice x and 2 more than the quantity of 3 times x." Twice x means x multiplied by 2, which is 2x. 3 less than 2x means that 3 is being subtracted from 3, so that's 2x-3.
2) Product always means multiplication, so you will have to multiply 2x-3 by the next expression.
3)"2 more than the quantity 3 times x." 3 times x means you are multiplying 3 and x, so that equals 3x. 2 more always means you're adding by 2, so the second expression is 3x+2.
4) Multiply the two expressions. Two expressions multiplied by each other go in the parentheses like this: (2x-3)(3x+2)
5) To multiply this, you need to multiply the first term in the first pair of parentheses (2x) by the first and second terms in the second parentheses (3x and 2).
2x*3x is 6x(squared).
2x*2 is 4x.
You add those two and you get 6x(squared) + 4x.
6) Now you multiply the second term in the first pair of parentheses (-3) by the first and second terms in the second pair of parentheses (3x and 2).
-3*3x=-9x.
-3*2=-6.
7) Add all of the products you got (6xsquared, 4x, -9x, and 6).
6x(squared) +4x+-9x-6.
8) Simplify. You can add 4x and -9x because they have the like term (x). You add them like this: 4x+ -9x=-5x.
The answer is 6x(squared)-5x-6. You cannot simplify this any further. Another way of writing 6x(squared) is 6x2, so the answer from the choices you were given is 6x2-5x-6, or D.

You have to use FOIL
(2x-3)(3x+2)
F ront 2x * 3x = 6x^2
O utside 2x * 2 = 4x
I nside 3x * -3 = -9x
L ast 3- * 2 = -6
Now put all your answers together. 6x^2 + 4x - 9x - 6
6x^2 -5x -6
