The way people are using text speak to ask or answer questions on here. Sometimes I have to read a question 2 or 3 times to make sure I understand what they are saying! Does this annoy anybody else or am I being old fashioned in thinking that txspk be kept to mobiles?

I'm not being old fashioned. I use txspk on my moby just like evone else but there's no need to do so on the computor because there is no limit on the amount of characters you can use. So lets not lose the ability to spell or I'm just going to think that everyone who does use text speak on answers is slightly stupid!

I have found at least 10 or 15% of questions here at ANSWERS are undreadable.

Sure I was a champion speller, but that was the result of my caring about words, their order, and what they meant in the real world.

Spelling was a "by-product" of a naturally good memoery, a world-class ear and some effort. But even if you spell it right, knowing the reality your words are supposed to make clear to someone else isn't enough--although it's very necssary.

What is also needed is spelling the words you choose, and also taking the time to go over your question or statement once more, in order to see if it's complete enough so that someone (other than you) can obtain the information needed so his mind can understand what you wanted him/her to be able to understand.

Guys, just reread your statement, and correct it where needed, OK?

We are anxious to hear your question and usually willing to answer it inteilligently here in the Forum. But neither of these outcomes can be done if we don't know what you're asking or can't understand your reply.
Thanks.

I understand what you are trying to say.
I know it is sometimes hard to read things, but let's face it people who answer questions first usually get chosen as the answer and in order for them to do that they have to type quickly and use shortcuts i.e. text speech

Other times you have to think of other things as well:
1. Sometimes people make honest mistake that look like text speech but which aren't (I might have made one right now....)
2. Also, some people don't speak amazing english (their first language isn't english) but you have to give them respect for at least trying, I mean you would definitely find it difficult to speak another language, wouldn't you?

Thanks anyway :D

I think it should be kept to mobiles and then to a minimum. There is no need when you have a pen or a keyboard. I can understand the need on mobiles as you often have to press the button a few times to get a desired letter, and by keeping words to a minimum number of letters you get better value for you money per txt as you can fit more on one page.

All the texting and such has a bad influence on some students' spelling and grammar. They learn to replace single letters and numbers for words and thus don't practice writing in full sentences with proper punctuation. It can be difficult to interpret if you're not used to it. This site may help translate the shorthand text lingo into full words...

I guess it is old-fashioned, but I'm the same way. My friends tease me about spelling everything out in a text message. I even double space between sentences and have proper comma usage in my texts. I'm a dork! I still appreciate the written word. It'll be soon enough that the entire world will write in some form of short-hand, I'm sure.

Of course txt speak isn't really about writing - it's all about showing individuality by doing the same thing as all the others. Grown-ups and people with double-figure+ IQs recognise that for proper communication the half-witted nonsense that passes for txt spk is irrelevant.

It doesn't bother me - I just ignore it.

Yes, it annoys the hell out of me!!

I can sort of see the point on mobiles where space is limited but on here or in emails - why?! Not going to run out of room are they!! It is not even a time saver, I mean how much longer does it take to type 'text' instead of 'txt' or 'later' instead of 'ltr'??

It is just plain bone idle lazy!!

I agree - text speak should be left to mobiles, where you are limited in the number of characters you can use.

Your are absolutely right. If a person is too lazy to take the time to correctly form a question in English, he or she is not worth the effort of an answer.
