This is so weird. Up North I never had this problem. I live near Charlotte, NC and we are trying to build a large, and I mean large garage with other things that will probably cost us around $40k.

I have called several contractors to come out for an estimate, and no one shows up! They set an appointment and no show.

Why? Do they have that much work that they don't need a job?
I have looked on the internet, phone book, you name it, and these are reputable companies and no one will come.

Any suggestions?

Please don't say, do it ourselves, believe me, if my husband had the time he would, but he travels out of town often.

Absolutly not, we do not live in a rough neighborhood.
Very easy to get too.
We called each one back, and they say that they will get to us.
Go figure. We have tried several different times of the year, being the summer most contractors have a lot of work going on.
Again, never did we have this problem in NY.

I guess it's a cultural thing. In NY, procrastinators lose the job. Legitimate tradespeople compete for work, because if one doesn't show up, someone else will be ready and willing to do the work and make the money.

Them good ol' southern boys know you ain't gonna find anyone else to to the job, so they can show up whenever they please.

Personally, I can't even stand to go on vacation down there because of that Confederate do-nothing attitude.

See if you can find a company run by another Yankee.

It's probably a function of the contractors having too much work to do. That's not an excuse for their rudeness in setting an appointment and not showing up, it's probably what is happening. Some time ago I was dealing with similar circumstances and I would schedule three or four contractors for the same time slot with the hope that one would show up as scheduled (if more than one had shown up at the same time I planned to share with them why I had done so but it never happened). I will never pursue a contractor who did not show up as scheduled -- they have already demonstrated how working with them would be.

Good luck.

My husband would be thrilled if he had to turn people away when they call for estimates=) Then again we are up North!! Summer is everyones busy time no matter where you live and a lot of the work going on now was work that was contracted months ago. Go with someone who comes recommended by someone you trust and just find out when their estimator can meet with you. If they dont show you probably dont want them working for you in the first place. You'll find someone it just may take time!!

Have you called them back and asked why they are not showing up? It sounds odd that more then one or two wouldn't show up.
Not to be rude, but are the directions you give good? Do you live in a rough neighborhood? I can't imagine why they woudn't show up, but I would call them back and find out.
