The 2.8l inline-6 engine (codenamed M52B28) in the 328i received rave reviews as well as awards during its time because it was one of the most technologically advanced engines at that time. It produces just under 200hp.
So if you're asking which is the BEST engine, the 2.8l is the BEST.
But, if you're asking which one is a GOOD BALANCE between fuel economy and power, then the 323 would be my choice.
The E36 323i uses the M52B25 (2.5litre capacity) engine, which is NEWER than the M50B25 used in the 325i, and even though produces a lower 170hp, it produces the SAME torque much earlier; at 3500rpm (instead of 4200rpm); making it a more responsive and "drivable" car than the 325i.
The 316i is really too underpowered to be practical. Strike this model out of your list right away.
The 318i barely scrapes by. The 318is (16valve engine) is slightly better if you need to choose a 4-cylinder engine model.
If available, with the price of petrol the way it is now, I would seriously consider the 325tds (M51S; turbo diesel engine). It can out accelerate the 328i from a standing start; with a max torque just a few lb-ft lower than the 328i but, it gives you all that torque way early at just 2200rpm.

It depends on your fuel budget... I own a BMW 328 auto cabriolet, awesome car, but heavy on petrol. The 316 and 318 is practically useless on the open road but it will eventually bring you from point A to point B. I'd say if you work with a fuel budget, get the 323 or the 325 which both is really great BMW motors. Anyway, you will be sure to enjoy your 328i.

You can't really compare the two cars because they are two different models. Unlike what some manufacturers produce - a base model and a sports model the 3 series and M series are different products with different purposes.

If you are looking for performance, 328 or 325.
328 has more power, but the 325 has it's fair share too.
My friend's 325 could keep up with my old 328 just fine.

the 328 really shifts, the 325 is quick but nowhere near the 28. the 16 is pointless as they dont move. all the e36's are juicy on petrol and ins so you may aswell get the good one
