2, 4, 6 quart pots, sautee pans, dutch oven, good skillets that can go in the oven, roasting pan...if you cook like I do you need many. If you don't cook that often you can get away with a boxed set I guess. I like my Cuisinart stainless set and have bought lots of others that match.

Depends on how much you cook, but in general--
1 fry pan, 1 small pot, 1 medium pot, 1 large pot, and a roaster pan (for the oven) can get most kitchens started off right.

Actually, none are NEEDED, if one has another way to cook for oneself. Many use the oven, broiler, barbecue, microwave, etc.

If one person lives alone, or with a very young child, that person can survive on one pot and one pan.

However, if this is a couple/family, or roommates, you may want to have at least: one small and one large pot, one small and one large pan, perhaps a saute pan, and a sauce pot.

Well it depends on how much cooking you do, I suppose. I like to cook so I'd say two different sizes of sauce pans, a small skillet and a large skillet, and a big stock pot. That's only four, and that works for me, but some people prefer more variety.
