It is painfully obvious that most of you don't listen to country music... it is impossible to narrow down such a broad list of music to just one great song no matter what genre you're thinking of. It's hard enough to do it for just one artist! "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is a great song but I wouldn't say it's even Charlie Daniel's best song let alone the greatest country song ever.

I would never try to pick out one song and say it is the greatest country song, so here's my list of favorites:

From Waylon Jennings:
Only Daddy That'll Walk the Line
Cedertown, Georgia
Stop the World (and let me off)
You Can Have Her
I've Always Been Crazy
Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way?
Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Outta Hand?
Pretend I Never Happened
Are You Ready For the Country
Never Could Toe the Mark
I May be Used (but baby I ain't used up)
I ain't Living Long Like This
Luckenbach, TX
Bob Wills is Still the King

From Willie Nelson:
Whiskey River
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain
The City of New Orleans
My Heros Have Always Been Cowboys
Poncho and Lefty
Angels Flying Too Close to the Ground
Georgia on my Mind
Seven Spanish Angels
Help Me Make it Through the Night

From Merle Haggard:
Think I'll Just Sit Here and Drink
Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down
Swinging Doors
Momma Tried
Workin' Man Blues
Are the Good Times Really Over for Good?
Misery and Gin
My Friends are Gonna Be Strangers
The Fightin' Side of Me

From Johnny Cash:
Sunday Morning Coming Down
Cocaine Blues
One Peice at a Time
A Boy Named Sue
Ghost Riders in the Sky
Folsom Prison Blues
Ring of Fire
Man in Black
Understand Your Man
It Ain't Me, Babe
Big River

From Hank Williams Jr.:
Family Tradition
Attitude Adjustment
Man of Steel
Dixie on my Mind
Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound
Women I've Never Had
The American Dream
Good Friends, Good Whiskey, and Good Lovin'
Stoned at the Jukebox
Women I've Never Had
A Country Boy Can Survive

Also check out:
Charlie Daniels Band
George Jones
Steve Earl
John Conlee
Marty Robbins
Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys

For modern day country music that's not s**t:
Jason Boland and the Stragglers
Charlie Robinson
Robert Earl Keen
Pat Green
Cross Canadian Ragweed
Gary Allan

I could go on and on but this is a good start for anybody who likes country music.
*on a final note - there is no way in the world that the greatest country song has been written in the last 20 years. The stuff that they try to pass off as "country" on the radio and CMT these days is a joke.

Waymore's Blues by Waylon Jennings. The new LP by Ray Wylie Hubbard, snake farm ( RAY WYLIE HUBBARD HAS BEEN AROUND FOR YEARS< AND HE'S BAD A'SS!) . Robert Earl Keen (Whenever kindness fails) Joe Ely(Boxcars) Chris Knight(Bridle on a bull) Slaid Cleaves(skunk juice) James McMurtry(Choctaw Bingo) Charlie Robison (Loving County) Jerry Jeff Walker(Pissin' in the wind) Guy Clark(The Randall Knife) townes van zandt (who wrote pancho and lefty. merle & willie do a beautiful cover, and emmylou harris does it justice too.) The song D. Ray White by Hank the 3rd is incredible beyond words. Wayne Hancock is even better and the song Thunderstorms and neon signs is a favorite .Steve Earle is pretty much a songwriting genius from Hillbilly Highway to Copperhead Road to CCKMP to John Walker's Blues. Billy Joe Shaver is probably one of the greatest song writers ever("i'm just an old chuck of coal...", covered by many of the greats and Old Five and Dimers like me) even if he doesn't have the best voice, he wrote alot of songs for Waylon and he is one dangerous man. ha ha. Long haired country boy by Charlie D., and by god we could be here all night long.

Charlie Daniels is up there along with John Denver. Some of my favorites are:

"The Highwayman" - The Highwaymen (Johnny Cash, Kris Cristopherson, Waylen Jennings, Willie Nelson)

"Jim I wore a tie today" - The Highwaymen

"Hot Rod Lincoln"- Johnny Bond

That is some classic stuff but thats the best kind of country music anyway!

Enjoy

I love some of the artists out of the Texas movement like one of the posters above but unf but I currently love most of the Earl Thomas conley Greatest hits cd I have and it would probably be "That was a close one".... Most songs are 20+ years old but still sound fresh and new. Plus very respected still in music for his writing and vocals (even though the cigarettes got to it now)

Devil Went Down to Georgia is definitely one of the all time best country songs. There are SO many! I think one of my favorites is The Grand Tour by George Jones.
