Since a lot of science is based on "Consensus" I can't go so far as to say that there is a solid definition of the word.

However I would say this is the way I define modern "science". A series of guesses that are used to influence culture politically, if enough people can be swayed to saying that it is a good guess.

I would say that my definition of science a hundred or so years ago would have been, a theory brought forth AFTER extensive research.

There are so many theory's being pushed as fact today that I can't get behind science. When scientist start thinking about science again, instead of global politics, perhaps I will start listening again.

Sorry to be so cynical.

Science - the accumulation of ideas, based on accurate (correct) and reliable (repeatable) methodology and hence results.
Scientific ideas are either concrete and proven with a large amount of evidence, or under investigation using hypotheses and analysis.

In addition to the previous answers... science is amoral (it's not good or bad... it is just facts). And science can only prove something to be false. It cannot prove something to be true.
